There's a 10in polisher on sale at a good price right now, and may be thinking of purchasing. What I was wondering, when polishing/waxing your vehicle does it really make difference with the polisher compared by hand?

 

I have one and I can make my truck look just as good by hand but damn it's a lot of work. I like the machine doing the work.

 

The only polisher to buy is the tried & true Porter cable 7336 model.

It is set up for the Griot's 6" or the Meguiar's 6" velcro backed pad that you attach the pads to.

I'm about due to do it here again, it's been since 4-27 when I last waxed it, and it's still beading water thanks to the Griot's Best Of Show wax.

 

For polishing yes, it's highly recommended. For a seal or final wax, it doesn't really matter. You can do that by hand.

 

I'll second the PC recommendation. Night and day difference between hand and machine polishing!!

 

I third the Porter Cable recomendation. My only bit to add is that the 7424 is virtually the same thing and often costs less. Like in my post a week or so ago, the deal at Coasttool.com with the Velcro backing pad and larger counter weight is a great by IMO.

We need a two pennies smiley. My 4 cents.

 

Just had to add. With many of the products I use on a weekly basis, you can't get the desired result without the heat that only the 5 or 6 speeds of a PC will give you. For example, Using Megs Dual Action Cleaner Polish (fairly abrasive) and a yellow Lake Country pad(slight cutting pad), I apply DACP and spread it evenly using speed 3 and move to 5 then 6 decreading pressure as I work in the product until there is virtually no moisture left behind. Now, if I were to do this by hand, not only would I need to do a kilo of PCP and Tweek, but I'd have rotator cuff replacement within 3 cars. Just speculation.

Sure, you could get that kind of shine by hand, if you do a square foot per day or had more than one set of arms. Why do it by hand when you can be lazy and let a machine do it faster, better and then your arm isn't tired to hold your beer?

 

I just tested it out on one of my car models (1:18 Toyota Lancruiser), its raining outside so I couldn't do it on the truck and its dirty anyways. I am very happy with the results, I only did the hood and damn what a difference. One more thing, do I use foam bonnet to apply the wax/polisher?

Corey, As far as I can tell, the only differences between the PC 7336 and the PC 7336 SP are the accessories that they come with. Correct?

I was at Lowes last night looking for the 7336, all they have in stock is the SP model.

Tom, I have not seen the SP model.
When I bought mine, I had to take off the stock pad as it was meant for attaching sand paper discs to.

You take that one off, then bolt on the Meguiar's or Griot's backing plate which has Velcro on it so either brands of pads will stick to it.

I have tried a few different brand of pads, and I feel the Griot's red wax and orange polish pads are the best.
They are lower profile too, and let you get closer to the surface of your paint.

 

I have been debating and I think that once the warmer weather hits I will be making a trip to Lowe's to get one...I want my truck looking like that!
