does the 4 cyl perform good in the dunes? (PISMO)

I havent been able to find a 6 cyl 5 speed extended cab for around the price i am looking for. i am limited to 98+ and less than 65k miles. i also want white, silver, or black. i have found several around the 14k range, but have also found several 4 cyl's for around 10k. i may just buy the 4 cyl and use the extra 4k/saved money to buy a used yamaha r6.

anyways.........can i expect the 4 cyl to perform at least decent in the dunes? such as comp hill in pismo...? i dont need or want a super fast/racer obviously, i just dont wanna get stuck with something that cant at least do the job. lemmie know your opinions, thanks

I spend a fair amount of time at the regon coast dunes every summer with my '90 22re. It is fun but you definately have to know the limits of the truck. You can pretty much go anywhere but the engine does not have enough power to move a whole lot of sand beneath you. Dont even think you will be able to go racing up a huge hill or anything that requires a lot of torque and tire spin. Expect to spend the whole time at WOT in second gear tearing around with the engine screaming at you. It's a whole lot of fun for me and I make it anywhere the other rigs do but i dont do it very fast thats for sure. I would imagine the 2.7's to perform much better than mine, but if its dune thrashing fun you are looking for just get a quad and save your rig from the wear and tear.

I live about 15 minutes from Pismo and take my 2.7 out there all the time. I run most of Pismo in 2wd because it's so easy. A 4 banger out there does great, I even race some of the full-size trucks and a lot of times can beat them because I can hook up faster on the sand. There isn't a hill out at Pismo that a 4wd 4 banger shouldn't be able to climb with ease.

I take my 2.7L and play on the Oregon National Dunes all the time. I haven't found a dune yet that I can't climb (and there are some monsters out there)..

There are times however when I wished that I had the 3.4L under the hood, mostly when racing quads (I lose everytime) and when I get out into the super soft sand around Horsfall and Whiskey Run beaches.. Oh, well, I can still spank the pants off my friends '85 w/ the gutless 22RE!!

honestly, if you could do it all over again would you get the v6?

im still stuck on whether i want power or gas mileage. one of the reasons i am selling my fullsize chevy is because of mileage. the v6 tacoma doesnt get much better than my truck, i think like 1 mpg. =/
