depends on what powerplant. 3.4l has a belt, 2.7 has a chain (i think)

after further research, looks like most, if not all, pre-runners have the 3.4 V6

We can't say if you don't tell us which engine...

2.7L 4cylinder (3rz) has a timing chain
3.4L v6 (5vz) has a timing belt.

Not the case mang. Many prerunners were 4Cyl.

Can it be assumed (as it can be for 4runners) that an SR5 would=V6 for the prerunner?

Not always. Some of the SR5 trucks have the 4cyl option. It CAN be assumed, that all PreRunners are autos. Toyota did not offer a manual trans prerunner. I mistake IMHO.

Last I checked, almost all Japanese motors are interference motors. This doesn't sound good for you OMG...

3.4 V6 is a non-interference engine. But if the belt breaks you stop immediately, and not always somewhere convenient.

Are your absolutely certain that the 2001 tacoma 3.4 v6 is not interference?????
This is a selling point for me.

in a non-interference engine when you blow a timing chain or belt your good to go, nothing is messed up.

in an interference engine when you blow a timing chain or belt, say bye bye to the valve train

if a timing chain breaks you cause severe engine damage. (interference). if the BELT breaks, the engine stops until you put a new belt in, no damage done. (non-interference)

"Interference" has nothing at all to do with chain vs. belt. An engine with a chain can be a non-interference engine, and an engine with a belt can be an interference engine. It has everything to do with valves and pistons.

Again, use the search function. All of this has been discussed at GREAT lengths here. No sense in dragging it out again.

Thanks for the info. Normally I would use the search feature and do, but since they were already on subject I was hoping someone had a quick easy answer.

I'd rather have someone post an on-topic question in an existing thread than start another thread that will just add to the plethora of existing threads...

So thank you.
