I mean that paper like yellow stuff on the underside of the hood. I know it is for insulation. Mine has been wet so many times it is all gross and falling off. Do I NEED to repair/replace it, or can I just rip it off and pitch it?

If its that cloth stuff on the underside of the hood than yeah i got that. I wanna change mine out for the silver foil type heat reflective insulation stuff.

 

instead of the heat reflective stuff i would just toss it and get a hood scoop, heat rises so all the hot air will rise out thru the scoop.

 

I think the main purpose of the liner is the prevent the heat from the engine getting the hood too hot thereby fading the paint on the top side. Probably not a big deal not to have one for the short term, could be an issue without one for a long time, though.

 

Mine's been out for two years and the heat hasn't hurt the paint yet...

It's an NVH thing, absorbs some of the engine noise, and keeps the hood from acting like a big speaker.

 

Sure is, but as mentioned earlier, paint has been known to oxidize faster without the liner because of the added heat on the hood. Maybe with frequent clay and wax, etc. it wouldn't pose a problem.

 

I thought it was there as a safety precaution should there be an engine fire...

 

My 93 had it, my brother's 96 Tacoma doesn't have it, and my 98 Tacoma does. When I searched on here it seems like some Toyotas came with it and some didn't even of the same years. I don't think the new newer Tacomas come with it at all. I read that the plastic clips holding the liner to the hood melt in a fire causing it to fall on the engine supposively helping put it out. I'm sure it helps with sound and heat insulation as well.

 

Mine is off, I didn't replace it when I got the hoodscoop hood, it's just a pain.

 

Mine doesn't have it and I have considered using dynamat instead. They actually sell a hood kit if I remember corectly.

 

That's what I always thought it was for. And the fact that it helps reduce heat on the paint and maybe noises was just a 'bonus' aspect of having it.

 

the tacos dont have it, the 4R and the LX does...

I wonder how affective it would be in the case of an engine fire. Any of you folks have any personal experience? :fireman:

 

i do believe at the very least, it offers *some* minimal protection of the hood from premature aging and some sound deadening. my 99 had it but my 98 doesnt and i *think* the 98 is slightly louder, but thats probably more from the manual tranny than anythign else
