I'm pricing out the timing belt and water pump work here in Richmond VA. Dealers want 300 for TB, 350 for water pump and no break on price for doing them together... a "Toyota specialty shop" is quoting $685 for accessory belts, timing belt, wp, cam & crank seals and would do the idlers if necessary for just the costs of the extra parts (roughly $200).
So your quotes are not far from mine... seems like everybody charges labor twice (once for TB, once for WP). That's lame.

Mr DAlison

I would be glad to get the parts at my cost As i need to get the stuff to do mine that way we could have twice as much fun

See you Friday

He doesn`t tell you his other car is a Ferrari

Or the 4Runner belongs to The Mrs. And I can`t blame him I have learned my lesson working on women`s vehicles.

yup, you got that right. I called the 4 dealers near me(all within 40 minutes) and got the closest one to price match the lowest quote and got a free loaner(corolla).

the specialty shops were more also, i would rather have the dealer do it....

Damn I wish the quotes I was getting down in South Florida were close to that...I think Ive called 3 or 4 local dealerships and they all quoted 900-1000 for all belts, water pump and seals. I can probably do the work myself but truthfully I hate motor work. I may have an old roomate do it who works as a mechanic for a lot cheaper though.

What stealership quoted that price... Harrisburg Toyota or Bobby Rahal Toyota?

Food for future thought... Hanover Toyota is probably the best and most reasonable Toyota Dealership in the area. I live 12 miles from Harrisburg and 4 miles from Bobby Rahal, but I opt to drive 35 miles to Hanover for all service work I cannot complete at home. I've had too many issues with the local guys and I refuse to give them another cent of my money! IMHO

you know, that 572 was from last year and i can't remember where it was from. I called hanover toyota and their prices have always been fair, but they are a bit out of my normal travels to go there. I got york auto group toyota to price match and i also had a loaner. I needed a/c service also. So the total bill was $815 with tax for all belts, water pump, thermostat, and a/c service. I didn't call lancaster toyota for a quote since hanover is always lowest.

When i had york toyota do my timing belt on my es a couple years ago, i had some issues. These were worked out and i went back with no more issues.

When/if the TB breaks,Does it damage the valves or the pistons, or does it just stop running?

Non interference engine so it just stops running. Still better to prevent a tow and replace the belt before that happens.

Just wondering.

My TB has 175K on it and the water pump has 275K on it.

When I first bought it in 01 with 100K on it, the front was bashed in, so I changed the TB while I had the front cover off the engine to check & see if there was any damage behind the cover or if it was just the cover that got bashed.

Gonna get the 1KZT & 5 speed transplant in a few months.

I scheduled my TB & WP to be changed this Thursday at a local independent Toyota shop. They installed my TRD headers a few years ago and I was pleased with their service. I repair and installed almost everything on my ride, but don't have too much time for this.

I bought my 4Runner new off of the lot 10 years ago and I've never changed either, so I thought I better get on this while my luck is still good. I also remembered that I hadn't replaced either of my rad hoses in this same period. I'm surprised they all have lasted through these Arizona summers without blowing.

The shop quoted me $620 complete. Since they'll have the hoses off, I thought it would be best to install the new ones.

Late to the party but figured I'd chime in. I called two dealers here in Georgia last year and they wanted almost $800 for the whole shooting match. One dealer did offer me $50 off, though. I ordered the replacement parts online, along with the tensioner holding tool on ebay. Like a few other folks I made the SST, but used a piece of red oak ->

Seems like I spent under $300 for everything. Not a difficult job at all, if you've time and patience.

EDIT: See that you already had the service done. Glad you got it worked out and it looks like the dealer took care of you with the loaner
