Wow. From the sounds of it none of you guys are really in control of your rpm levels. The disadvantage of auto vs manual(+they're not nearly as fun). Anyway I have a tendency to shift around 3000 or so rpm but once i hit those long highway drives, 75-80 mph = about 3500 - 4000 rpm in 5th for my 2 - 4 hour trips. On some of the highways I live around, you can't be shy when you're merging into traffic or you'll be eaten alive. Probably worst on the beltway and rt 95 in North va around DC and rt 81 in southwest va. How you drive relies heavily on location. Jersey was fun.

i usually shift around 3k rpm, although if i mash my 10" pedal to the floor(i love these old trucks) the secondaries kick in and make my little 4 banger sound like a big block v8. i can accelerate going uphill pretty much anywhere. my cruising speed on the freeway is around 3k, since i have a 4 speed = no OD

Ha Ha Ha you must drive downhill all the time
Please come to NC, find a mud hole and I'll show you the importance of a rev limiter. Some places you just caint go with out rpms of 6000+ Trust me that 3.4L can stand this for at least 15min. Give it hell and you will see that it performs way better.
spinning tires+high rpms=clean lugs on tires

How do you hit 6K RPM on the stock rev limiter? Mine bounces off the limiter right around an indicated 5500/5600.

i have seen his rpm's at 6500 -- the redline is about 6G's i think??
and the rev limiter does kick in cause the rpm's start dancing from 5500-6500

ive seen Hyperlite use 1/2 a tank of gas and not even go 15 feet -- now you know why he is on his 4th set of drive axles :pat:- he broke one this time but managed to get out of the hole in true 2wd with the e-locker

"its not stuck until its broke"

Gee, and I thought Toyota put the redline on the tach just for "pretty".

I have a fairly light foot and will typically rev it not much past 3000, but when I have to pass someone in a short passing zone, I won't hesitate to mash it and my 3.4 will rev to 4500-5000 without making the least bit of unpleasant sound. I agree on blowing the crap out on occasion.

Not retired, just realised a long time ago that going fast does not equal getting faster to the destination

I love it when some jerk cuts me off, races through traffic only to end up in the same or worst position in traffic at the light quarter mile down the road

Deposits? Do higher RPMs burn hotter?
Can you tell me what types of mods you have done to get 23.5 mpg on the highway. I just bought my 2001 4Runner 4WD last month, and the only thing I have dropped in is the Amsoil 2-Stage Oil Filter. I have also ordered the Amsoil Synthetic oil, and the oil filter, and should be putting in that shortly. Before any Amsoil changes, I have been getting 19.5 mpg on the highway. I am really easy on the gas, so I would appreciate any tips on what you did on your vehicle to get such a good mileage. I would be content with getting 22-24 on the highway.

Thanks,
Gary

No mods at all, well except the deckplate. The mileage is down by about 1mpg now since the weather is colder.

City and highway is very very relative. In NYC traffic getting 1 mile to the tank is possible But most of my miles are to and from work, 20-25min to cover just 6 miles, so that is definitly city. If there were less warm ups and cool downs I bet another 0.5mpg would be possible.

Read the window sticker that came with the car. The fine print under the MPG ratings reads something to the extent of "you mileage will vary, driver's in the test group reported from like 13 to 23 miles per gallon city and 17 to 27 highway". That's from memory, but it does vary greatly.

I got the window sticker in hand.

"Your mileage will vary with driving conditions, driving habits and vehicle's condition. Results reported to indicate that the majority of vehicles with these estimates achieve between 14 to 20 mpg city and 17 to 23 mpg highway."

Only way you're gonna avg 27 MPG is with the help of the jetstream or downhill.
