Disabling the door buzzer

Guys,

I disabled the door buzzer/chime device on my 99 about two years ago. Some guy wrote this amazing poem on how to do it. I figured that my 98 would be similar but that isn't the case. There is no door buzzer "housing" on the rear of the instrument cluster like the 99.

Anyone have a clue on how to disable it on a 98? I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!

Bob (aka "Bob_Rubb"---that is until the novelty wears off, yo)

Hey Bob can you point me to the writeup for your 98? I saw you talking about it in another buzzer thread but can't find it. I'm gonna start on mine right now.

rocket,

oh man, i know its in here somewhere there are two ways of doing this:

a) piercing holes in the bell piece (whatever the technical name for it is)
b) cutting the wire
c) filling that little bell thing w/ silicone

now i know that photoleif did a great writeup on this on his 93? truck. what he did was put a switch between the wire, so he could turn this feature on and off. (that leif...he's a smaaart guy ). here it is: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...ghlight=buzzer

one thing that is bad about method a) is that it is one of those "point of no return" mods. remember too, that that same buzzer warns you that your lights are on. i forgot that when i pierced the buzzer. (that bob...he's not as smart as he thinks he is ). not to mention, i mangled some of the clips that was holding the fuse junction box.

ok, to get you started, remove the bottom driver's side panel. it would be good if you completely removed it out of the way by unscrewing the hood and gas door latches.

the junction box you need to find is the big yellow one that is below the left vent. can't miss it. now here's the hard part: removing that from the clips. at least i had trouble.

the buzzer is actually on the back, but if you had the wiring schematics and if the wire was accessible without removing the JB, then all you would have to do is to cut it and/or add a switch like leif did.

sorry, no pictures, but this should help you get started

bob

I took everything apart while waiting for your reply. Got that black box apart too-no damage I would like to keep the buzzer for my lights so i think i'm gonna try some tape or something.... and if that don't work to my liking, then i'll do what photoleif did. thanks Bob! i'm going back outside...

ahh yes! I should have done this months ago. No more annoying ding*ding*ding sound!

Plan A: First, i put a couple pieces of electrical tape on the buzzer. Still too loud. darn.

Plan B: I thought a cotton ball would surely help...

Got it taped up again...

It was STILL too loud!

Plan C: I got a Q-tip and shoved it inside the hole of the buzzer...

Put some tape on again...

BINGO! It works! I can only hear it if i really listen for it. It's very, very quite now. Which is what i wanted.
I can turn my radio on LOW volume with the door open and don't hear that annoying ding-ding noise at all.

Also, If i ever leave my lights on, i should still barely be able to hear the countinous buzz.

I left enough of the Q-tip "stick" (w/out knowing) so that when i put the black box back together, the one side pressed against the protuding "stick" causing the Q-tip to have some force behind it...keeping it firmly against the buzzer.

I did everything in about 30 minutes. Quick, easy, cheap, and a satisfactory result. I'll call my version the "Q-tip mod".

one more pic as i was putting everything back together...

why not just remove the sensor that checks if the door is open and leave the
"lights on" sensor? I will look into doing this. I admit I have not looked, but hey how hard could it be.

OK, I just went to my garage to see how mine acts. Mine only goes "ding ding ding..." if I have the key in the ignition and the door open. So I took the panel off that is covering the drivers seat belt, disconnected the small plug with two wires that is connected to the door open sensor and wallah no more annoying noise. Maybe Im missing something, but dang that was simple.

Bob, yeah i did think about that but how hot could that little buzzer actually get? I can't see the rest of the box getting hot but i don't know. I think i'll take the main pannel off and test the temperature after driving for a bit.

the sensor is a little thing that sticks out from the truck near where the door handle is. It pushes in when you close the door all the way. No need to cut anything or stuff any buzzers. Keep in mind mine is 96, so maybe they got fancier with some stuff, but the sensor is right there and I doubt they would change such a simple and affective device.

nice

is that all that plug does? are you sure it doesn't disable other features?

well i believe you've discovered the easiest, less invasive method to disable the door buzzer.
