Makes sense, it rains pretty blindingly here sometimes.

yeah i think in canada...you have to have DRL. pretty much every car i saw there had them

Ya know you can turn the truck off - put the ebrake on and restart the truck and the DRL will be off untill you re-lease the e-brake.

and to all you other guys that are for the daytime running lights....thats cool. i know its a safety feature....and it will make it easier for people to see me on dark or rainy days, but im gonna get hids....and you cant have DRL with hid's. when its dark or rainy...i usually turn my lights on anyway
Ground the ecu side wire. The one from the plastic plug in your pic. Below is the actual TSB which calls for pulling the pin and replacing it.

I did the cut wire on mine a long time ago, with grounding, with no problems.

cool thanks man...

so just extend my wire from the plastic harness and ground it to a nut or something like a bolt? happypills told me to not ground it though. so just do like it says to do with the avalon right? i hope this fixes the problem!

Yes

Let us know if it works. All the things I have read on this, says you only need to ground the wire if the lights still come on after the wire has been cut.

are you talking about the headlights or the hi beam indicator light that still comes on after cutting the wire?

I've never seen anyone with a 2nd gen mention DRL's before...

Did they come on 2nd gens in the states? My truck has them but perhaps it was just for Canadian models? I'm curious now.

The 2nd gens only had them in Canada, I bypassed them on both my '91s I had. My '97 I did this too.
On the '91 the DRL relay gets a signal from the ebrake, they stay off when you start with the ebrake on. I took that wire and tied it to ground or 12v. I can't remember. Anyway, the DRL relay never knew I released the ebrake, and the DRL's stayed off.
Another option is to use a 3 way switch so you can turn them back on as required.

I did the wire disconnect mod and I had the hi-beam indicator glow dim too. Funny thing is I reconnected the wire back and the hi-beam indicator doesn't glow but my DRLS are still disabled. Maybe I broke it.

hmm thats weird. at least it worked out good for you! hahaha. knowing my luck, if i reconnected my wire....i bet the drl's would come back on and the light would still be dim. how come you reconnected the wire anyway?

The reasons that I will soon be switching (adding a swtich to control my DRLs) are:

It is nice to have control of the lights,

- to signal that moron that forgot to turn on their headlights
- to signal trucks that it is ok for them come over into your lane on the highway
- to drive into a camping area and turn off head lights and not wake everyone in the camp ground up
- to turn off head lights in severe fog/blizzard situations where even the head lights are causing too much glare
- parking/necking in the vehicle with lights on as stated earlier in this thread

I do plan on using them during the day when there is clear sunlight, but if it is overcast or just a slight bit dark, I will switch them off and use my headlights.

This may be the only mod that has never caused me an issue. I never had the high beam light on at all only if I have them on.

When you have the HID's, the reduced voltage for the DRL's would cause the HID's to strobe.

I tried putting an in-line toggle switch to the DRL wire mentioned in the TSB. I disconnected the Bat and hooked the switch up and this worked great until I went to mount the switch. The location I choose I had to extend the wire. Being in a hurry I did not disconnect the bat this time around (not sure it mattered). So I mounted the switch and lengthend the wire (only a couple inches). Well when I started the truck this time the DRL's wouldn't come on. This got me frustrated because it just worked 2 minutes earlier. I removed the switch and reconnected the wire back to the original configuration and the DRL's did not work again. So mine are permenantly disabled now - even though I wanted the option to turn the DRL's on/off. I've never had my high beam indicator come on though.

All fuses are good - double checked them. I even pulled the bat cable again for 15 - 20 min to reset the computer. No luck. Is there a DRL relay I'm missing somewhere?
