a different, same old tire question.

I know the subject of tires has been beat to death. But, I think I have a question that hasn't been beat to death. In the reading, research, and personal experience, i've narrowed my new tire choise down to the BFG a/t or m/t. I think the a/t probably fit my driving style little better, but I really like the more aggresive look of the mud terrains. So i've decided to make a smart decision based on how long the tires are going to last. So my question is, how many miles have people gotten out of a set of All Terrains or a set of Mud Terrains. I would like the Mud Terrains, but if i'm going to get a lot more miles out of the All Terrains I will probably run the All-Terrains.

they are equally well built tire. As long as you take care of them (proper balance, rotation, tire pressure) the differences between the too are negligble.

The MTs will not last nearly as long on pavement as the ATs. Otherwise, yes they are equally well-built tires.

I have 65,000 miles on my A/Ts. I can probably get 5,000 more no problem.

I have BFG A/T's. They're rotated regularly and see a daily commute of 130 miles. New, the A/T's have 17/32" tread depth. After 30,000 miles, my tread depth measures 15/32"! Excellent treadwear. Regardless of which brand and model of tire you choose, proper balancing, rotation, alignment and inflation pressure will be key.

the new bfg at and mt are made with the same hardness compound as each other....

as filthyrich said, the difference wont be much at all... that said, the mts will probably wear faster, but not by much.....

Why did you narrow it down to BFGs? If you want a M/T tire but need/want long tread life then BFG M/Ts are not the tire you should go after.
Read the reviews on this tire. Notice the specific comparisons that some people make to the BFG's.
Firestone Destinations would be a wiser choice IMO.

The tread pattern makes a big difference in wear. I've worn out a lot of tires (and I"m old!) so trust me on that. I have NEVER gotten more than about half the tread life out of a comparable set of mud tires. Mud tread squirms (wear) and slips (wear) and has higher rolling resistance (wear) and due to the higher void ratio supports a higher load per sq inch of actual rubber in contact with the road (wear.) That noise they make going down the road? - That's the tread wearing off...

as flamedx4 mentioned the wear on M/T's are so bad because there isnt as much rubber touching the ground. You litterally have to wear out more material on the A/T.

The M/T really shines in the mud and offroad because of the huge gaps between the tread which clean themselves fairly easily. The A/T wont clean itself as well because there isnt as much space between the tread, the mud will have more of a hold on the tire. But this extra tread, or lack of space actually makes it harder to wear out the tire, even though thats not what it was designed for its only natural it takes more time to wear out more rubber.

So the A/T will last longer then a M/T if both given the same maintance. How much longer? I dunno I guess it depends on driving style. I had 31" A/T's on my jeep that lasted 45K+ miles. Then I got a lift and put 33" M/T's and got about 20k before they were on their way out.

Alot of the miles on the M/T's were abused more then the A/T's were though.
