Difference between 2wd A340 and 4x4 A340?

Difference between 2wd A340 and 4x4 A340?
Is there a difference between a 2002 Tacoma Double Cab 2wd V6 transmission and a 98 4Runner 4x4 V6 transmission? I'm not clear on how the tranny works with the transfer case and was curious to if they are interchangeable between vehicles?
