Guys, I am doing a remote start installation for my 4Runner and am trying to find a certain wire that tells the remote start system the engine RPMs. According to this vehicle-specific guide I have, I am looking for a black wire connected to a "Diagnostic" panel/connector, etc. Where can I find this? I have a feeling that I am overlooking something here, something quite simple but can't put my finger on it at 2 in the morning.

Which truck are you doing it on? 2nd gen or 3rd gen?
If it is 3rd gen, just look at the pics for alarm install where I put in a remote start too.
The RPM lead is available just behind the guage cluster.

 

Thanks for your reply. It's actually my 2nd gen, which I think has a mechanical tachometer (because I can hear it spinning lol).

 

your best bet is probably down under the dash by your steering column. thats where your OBD-II connector is... im thinkin thats where it should be.

it should have an electronic tach, my '84 does
one quick way to tell is to rev it up to about 4k and turn off the key, if the needle falls instantly its electronic, if it stays up and falls with the engine, its mechanical
