Gadget, you are probably thinking of water. I am actually thinking of the fine AZ dust that gets everywhere in my engine compartment. I close off the deckplate to avoid all the dust in the filter. I then put half a foam sponge in the location of the elbow to catch the large dust from the wheel well.

Then I remove it when I am done off-roading.

Does that make sense?

 

I did an oil anaylsis on my 4Runner with a K&N filter installed and the Si levels were worse than average, but not horrible. I've got a paper filter in my truck now to see how much it drops next change.

There are plenty of reports of Amsoil flters being overoiled from the factory and trashing Maf sensors, or only lasting 1-2 years before they fell apart . Look around the net. The main reason there are less complaints about them vs. K&N is because they've sold so few.

Myself, I think I'm going back to paper on everything except my Mustang when I autocross it. You can buy a decent paper filter for a 4Runner for under $15...

 

OK, I was hoping there was a method to you maddness, thanks for sharing.

From my point of view, it is not going to stop water with the elbow out and the topic of less dust has come up lots of times before. I know there there is no more dust coming through the deck plate then the snorkle contary to popular belief and I see that you also see that and have addressed that.

We can call your idea the "dust sponge mod". What do you think??
