Question Deckplate quesiton

For the people who have the deckplate mod...when it rains do you all put the lid on so water doesnt get it or will water not hurt the airbox/intake?

I do not have the deckplate mod, because I have a 2nd gen, but from what I have heard, rain will not bother it, just deep water crossings and such. I would not put the cover on for rain. That is what I remember, someone may prove me wrong. :fireman:

I did a write up waaaay back when on the elbow removal. My buddy who is into cars says that the air elbow method is better b/c it draws cooler air from the fender well vs. the engine bay. However if you intend to ever drive the 4runner in deep water, you MUST do the deckplate!

Deep enough that it can get sucked up into the intake. I would think that a foot is not bad, but be careful over that! Just my thought though.. :fireman:

You don't need the cover on unless you plan on swimming...

You would have to be in a very deep lake to take water in.
Bob: the airbox elbow mod may take a little colder air in, but it is still restrictive. IMO, the deckplate mod, will "ram" outside air into the intake better than the elbow removal.
I noticed more power with the deckplate mod, than the elbow removal.

The only time I put the plate on is when i am driving down a very dusty road and want to keep my filter cleaner.

I've done the deckplate. Can you also do the elbow mod and get more hp out of the rig? Any links for this elbow mod?

Thx
Danny

I don't think that they would even notice it.

In most states, I don't think that it would be a problem. All the emission sensors are still being used.

Good question about smog. I think it depends on who you go to and what state you are in. In CA. I have taken cars with smog legal mods (even with exempt # stickers) and been turned down. and I have taken cars with mods like the deck plate and no sticker to other places and had no trouble. So I think it just comes down to the shop or even the smog technician. But I also think most would not even notice.
