On the question of how deep of water is bad.
My son was driving his 85 EFI PU without the front grill installed. The air intake nozzle to the air box is behind the grill, but the "Toyota" name is on a plate that protects the nozzle from direct spray.
Remember there was no grill installed. He went through about 6" of water at speed, which caused a splash out front, which got sucked into the airbox and through the filter. This water then made it to the rear 2 cylinders of the engine (since the water is heavy, it couldn't make the sharp turn into the front 2 cyl's). Since water does not compress, it bent the piston rods.
It now has the grill installed
6" of water theoreticly shoud not have been bad, but it is what you do with it that can cause damage.
