D1, D2

I know that for us with automatics, D1 and D2 are supposed to be used for towing. I'm not a tech guru, so correct me if I'm wrong here... I seem to remember that in D1 and D2 the shift points are made higher so that you keep more power and go to a higher RPM band before shifting, right?

I have a 2wd truck, and I feel like I loose traction alot when I'm in the sand or mud as a result of my auto tranny shifting early resulting in a loss of power. I figured that maybe if I ran off-road in D1 or D2 I'd keep some of that power that I'm lacking.

Does any of that make sense? Is my logic flawed?

I don't know, that's why I was asking.

= )

I was just wondering if using them would help my off-roading since now I'm driving an automatic and I feel like I don't have the OMPH that comes with being able to change gears myself.

"1" or "L" keeps your transmission in 1st gear.

"2" keeps your transmission from shifting above 2nd gear.

If you have a 4runner or pickup with an auto you'll also have an "ECT" button which in "power" mode will raise the shift points to higher RPMs. This mode is intended for towing use.

This is not an offroad topic, moving to general tech section...

The question wasn't originally meant to be about what D1 and D2 meant, it was actually more like "will D1 and D2 help me when wheeling in an automatic?"

Sorry for any confusion.

Yes, and no. Depends on the situation. If you feel you're lugging down then yes do try downshifting.
