How do I know if my '98 SR5 V-6 4Runner has the A.D.D. (Auto Disconnect Dif)? It's a 5-speed with the manual Transfer case.

That's the only way the 90 to current 4Runners were made.

Unfortunately 3rd gen ADD is very expensive to disable. It isn't as easy as putting manual hubs like us 2nd gen guys do.

I don't know if it's just me, but i find it funny that Toyota called it ADD.

I've seen Taco's with manual hubs, can't these be retrofitted? Aren't most of the components the same for the 3rd Gen Runner and Taco front end? I'm referring to the thread about using a Taco front end lift on a 3rd Gen Runner. Either that or I'm completely nuts...

The consensus at 4x4wire was that the Taco and 4Runner have small differences in front diffs. The O.R.S. kit (is that right?) is the easiest way to get manual hubs on third gen runners..

You might be right, but you are still completely nuts.

Yeah, you have it. I posted a similar thread a while back asking the same question about my '99 when I first bought it about a month ago. The owner's manual makes it a bit confusing, so I called my brother-in-law who is a Toyota "master mechanic" in Atlanta and he agreed that the owner's manual was a bit misleading, but assured me that all 3rd gen 4runners have ADD and were not available any other way. Hope this helps.

less wear on cvs, better fuel economy (slightly) but mainly just less stressful and less wear on your cvs
