Cylinder Misfire Logistics...please help?!

Cylinder Misfire Logistics...please help?!

Code: P0305, Misfire Cylinder #5

1) If coil pack was out, wouldn't it throw both 5 and 6 cylinders at the same time?

2) Its intermittent problem. It comes and goes.

3) Tested all coil packs with ohmmeter, via FSM: http://ncttora.com/fsm/2000/Repair%2...nition/ovi.pdf
Primary connection: ~1.2 ohms
Secondary (high tension) ~ No reading/Infinite (Should be around 13 ohm) EDIT: SHOULD IT BE KOhm!? I think its a misprint?

Sure, I thought that it would mean the coil pack was bad, but every one read the same thing, so I just decided either me or my multimeter was retarded.

4) Since its intermittent, you'd think it was an injector starting to go bad?

Spark plug looks great, does smell like unburnt fuel. Could not get spark though when turned over engine. I think its a coil but I can't figure it out.

Baja, it is possible for a coil that's going bad to make only 1 of the 2 cylinders it fires miss. I would swap them to see if the miss moves even though you tested them with the voltmeter. 1, because it's easy and free, 2 because you never know. Since it's intermittant, you may have tested them when they happened to be operating correctly. Also, I had a coil boot go bad. The coil fired the plug on the far side just fine, but the juice wasn't making it the plug 6" below the pack. Everybody knows to change the wires every few years, but as I'm sure you are aware, the boots are the wires for 1/2 the engine and I'd be willing to bet the majority of the 3rd gens out there are still running the original coil boots even into the 200Ks.

Thanks guys...I am trying to diagnose this for a friend. He doesn't know a thing about engines, and well....I'm not that much better

The coil is normal colored... I need to swap the coils around to figure out if the code travels to a different cylinder.

Well I just thought Id update here. I know theres a ton of threads on this issue but hopefully this helps another.

Swapped coil packs and the misfire stayed with #5, so we are going to swap the injector.

Thanks for the update. Might try running a can of BG44k (injector cleaner) through the tank before you try swapping the injector.

Ok sounds good! It is intermittient, which in my mind sounds like the injector gets stuck once in a while, and might be mechanical rather than electrical?

It might help to do that. I will pass on that information.

FWIW...
I have used BG 44K for some time with good results. With that said, if your friend has never used a cleaner in his Yota before, dump the BG into the fuel tank at the gas station, fill up the Yota with gas, drive around to the tank light comes on, then change the oil. It will clean up alot of crud inside including the injector, which you do not want floating around inside the engine.

Since BG is usually not available at the chain brand auto store (specialty shops carry it), try Redline fuel injector, ST1. Works well and can be found at at your local Pep Boys....
