cv axle replacement

Hey

I have to replace the front cv axle on my 1992 runner. The outer cv joint failed. I bought a new assembled cv shaft and having some trouble installing it. Removing the old shaft was easy because it was in pieces Do I have to disconnect the the whole steering knuckle, shock etc, or is there a trick for installing the new one?

Thanks

Steve

Disconnecting the shock and/or swaybar helps but I don't think its absolutly necessary. You don't have to undo the whole knuckle either, just the hub down to the snap ring and the bolt anw washer that go on the end of the axleshaft. I used a floor jack to lower and raise the suspension to winda wiggle it into place. I think it went up to get the shaft all the way in, then let it droop to get the other end on the diff output flange.

Another option is to put the nuts on the studs, hammer the studs back some so you don't have to try to compress the inner joint quite so far before it will go on the flange.

Good luck and welcome aboard.

PS Here is a PDF file that shows it pretty well. You have to take off all the crap pictured in the first illustration. Exploded view in the second pic but most of the hub will come off in one piece.
