Custom Rear Bumper w/Tire carrier - why on the right hand side?
#21
I've got a solution for the height/visibility problem and I'll probably implement if I ever make another bumper. I'm going to make the tire height adjustable...low for the street and high for off road. Just pull a pin and slide it up or down, kinda like a gym workout machine.

I have mine at the height that it was so that I could run a 35" spare and not have it above the roof. After hearing and seeing what Steve O did to keep the tire from hanging him up on steep ascents I was nervous, but Mr. Peterson convinced me to have it where it is. I have not done anything really steep yet, but it does not appear as though it will be a problem.
Darren makes a good point about the shorter arm length on the swing out. He is the first one who mentioned that to me and now it makes a lot of sense. Mine moves visibly in the mirror, but the bottom where the hinge is stays rock solid.
Schaefer makes a good point as well. One of the Jeeps I wheeled with in Moab had his whole swing away carrier off because it raises the center of gravity on hill climbs and unloads the front end. That may be more of an issue in taller, more extreme rigs, but one to consider either way.
I like the convenience of the tire where it is, easy to get off the truck and staring at the lugs in the mirror is fun.
Regarding backing on narrow trails, I am glad mine is where it is so that I can see after this weekend at Great Sand Dunes.
