Cruise control surges - What's up?

In my 95 4runner 4wd 5 speed the cruise control surges. The speed only changes 2-3 mph but it's pretty obnoxious. Does this indicate a vacuum leak or some mechanical/electrical problem? Do these systems have parts that wear out? If it's an easy fix I'll keep it. Otherwise, it'd be kind of cool to have a compressor or something in there. Thanks!

Most definately a vacuum leak..check cruise box under the hood (follow the throttle cable to it). You'll most likely find a vacuum cracked or otherwise broken....

Good luck.

The speed varies by a few miles per hour and the adjustments are very noticable. Thanks, Phoenix. I'll find that box and see if I can fix some leaks. It'll be nice to have it on the way up to Pismo next month for this little get-together.

Does the needle on your speedometer wobble a little when your holding a steady speed? I have 96 T100 and it did the same thing for a while. It finally got so bad that I stopped using the cruise contol. My speedometer would wobble a little above 50 miles per hour. As time went on the wobble turned into small spikes of the needle. I was playing with it one time on a long drive and noticed that the cruise contol was tring to following the movement of the needle. It would down shift on the spikes. So I went and purchased a new speedometer cable. I new it wasn't the the speedometer head because the dealer replaced that under warranty when I complained years before of the needle wobbling and still did it when I picked up my truck. Nice when you bring it in for a problem and they give it back to you the same as it was. So the only thing left was the cable. So replaced cable and needle was now steady and cruise control was back to normal. This was about 3 years ago and still works good but I'm starting to notice the needle is starting to move a little. I don't use the cruise control much since I put the turbo on last March. When I go some where today I will check and see if it is affected by the wobble again.

No the speedo cable. Does your speedo needle wobble?

The bracket that holds the cables (foot cable/cruise control cable) is rubbing against the hood bracing channels. Has anyone else had this problem? I guess as the motor does just a little twist, the bracket rubs. Anyone else have this problem?? I guess I can take a grinder to the hood brace??

I sort of had the same symptoms with my 91 4Runner. I would have it on cruise but then it would feel like it would shut down/cut out for a split second. My RPM gauge would jump from 2500rpm to about 4000rpm but just for that split second then, it would resume back to cruise. I thought that it was my clutch was going.

I haven't used the cruise for some time now so I don't know if it still does that. I actually forgot all about that problem until now. I guess I should take a short road trip somewhere to see.
