cracked air intake box - replace or upgrade

hello all:

I found a big crack on my 98 V6 runner air filter box a couple of wkends ago (the crack is on the back of the airbox), and I want to get some feedback on whether to head to the scrap yard for an old airbox ($349 quoted for new one from toyo dealer)? Or whether to upgrade to a cone filter (K&N)?

The feedbacks out there so far has been more airbox + deckplate mod > K&N.

Also, my check engine light came on about the same time as my discovery? Directly related to the bad filter box (too much air?) or something else? Trying to isolate the problem so I can make the proper fix.

Thanks.

I got a non-name branded cold air intake off of Ebay, WITH the heat shield for about $50. I have had it over 20k so far and no issues yet.

That is my vote.
