Are there any write ups on how to drain and refill coolant in a 3rd gen 4runner?

Thanks for any help

Nothing here but pretty basic, along the lower edge of the radiator is a petcock and drain. Place a bucket under it, open the radiator cap, open the petcock and the fluid in the radiator will drain right out. You still end u with the fluid in the motor to be flushed so I would do this after warming up the engine. Big issue here is you can get burned very easily. Be careful as this stuff is HOT!

What I used to do years ago was to warm up the engine, loosen the radiator cap (once again be very careful of heat and pressure), start the engine, open drain petcock and then have a hose standing buy with water ready to add to the system. As the system drains out refill with fresh water until you get a nice clean flow. Now the big issue anymore is "hazardous waste" bu then after you flush out the system, refill with your choice of anti-freeze/coolant. Next best option would be to take it to alocal mechanic and have the sytem flushed and filled. No hassle, no mess, no hazardous waste to dispose of.

ritzy covered it pretty well... another option (if you do it yourself) is to disconnect the lower radiator hose. have a bucket very close by bc it will drain the radiator and most of the fluid in the block also.. then reconnect the hose, fill system up with water, leave cap off, turn your heater on full blast and run the motor through a cycle or two (when your fan cuts on). then drain that out and refill with coolant. thats what i do and no issues yet

Yep, drain out of the radiator, but, thats not going to drain the block of the coolant. I've just run a hose into the top of the radiator, turn on the engine and have it cycle through.

You also can buy the prestone radiator cleaner, put it in, run it for a while, and make sure you get it out of there before a refil.

Also, remember you have to use RED Toyota Coolant.

why not just disconnect the bottom radiator hose and get most of the coolant out of the motor in one shot? just curious. either way it still works
