What I just thought about was in 01-02 they have a center diff lock on the dash, and no locker option... so what is the shifter pattern? I only drove one when we were runner shopping and dont remember...
My 03 has a dial for 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo.. then a button for center diff lock... so I can have AWD LO...
So someone with a 01-02 multi-mode chime in...

This is how his works (and I will learn mroe this week since he is going to North Caroline for business ...)
The position it is in for normal drive is all the way back
When you press the button AWD is engaged and the 4 Tires on the Dash Light up...
When you hit the button on the dash for the locker the center diff locks and a oragne light comes on solid to show that the center diff is locked...
Then you shift into neutral and push the stick all the way foward for 4Lo
And volia, thats how the 01'-02' multi mode shifter works...
At least I think...
Like I said I have it for a week so I will find out more later...
oooo 2 4Runners all to myself for a week...
What Am I gonna do with myself...

No, this is called 4WD select. You are in 2WD, push the button and its in 4wd. If you pull it back to 4lo, you dont need to push the button. Its done. You will have 4HI-N-4LO on the shifter. So you want to keep it in 4HI and push the button as needed.

I bet that guy is confused that asked the question. I have a 00 Limited with AWD. The shifter says H2-H4 (click the button for AWD) move it down to H4L and center is locked.Move it over to right for N and then up for L4. You can click AWD button up until 62 or 64? I keep it under 60 to be safe. You can use it for dry pavement, wet roads or just if you like using extra gas. AWD works best on snow roads better than H4L. It gets a little squirling sometimes in H4L. Disregard if this has been repeated.

I too like the AWD feature on snow and ice, but mainly because my 03 has VSC also, where the 00 doesnt, but AWD is still very stable... get into more than a 1" and 4wd will walk away from AWD...

Yeah... Both my moms 00 and my 03 have this setup... it took a while to explain the concept of all the option to them... Its a really really awesome system, wish you could get it in a taco... but as confusing as it is awesome, espically if you dont know the difference between a diff and a transmission, or hubcap

Not to add to the confusion, but as Toyota recommends driving in 4x4 at least 10 miles per month to get everything good and lubed up. Does putting it into AWD mode (center diff NOT locked) do the job, or do you need to lock it?

I was search around ebay to look for the 00' Multi-Mode shifter...
While I was searching I thought "Hey, Why not post pictures of the diffrent shifters"
So here ya go...
This is the no-button shifter out of my 97' Runner
How It works:
This Is 4WD, No AWD with this feature
In the position it is now
(Up, Left) Is 2H
(Down, Left) Is 4H
(Over, Middle, Right) Is N
(Right, Up) 4L
This Is One Of the Button Shifters or the 'Multi-Mode' Shifter Out of a 00' Runner
This is how it works:
This one has an AWD feature.
(Up, Left, Button NOT Pressed) Is 2Hi
(Up, Left, Button Pressed) Is AWD
(Down, Left, I presume button still pressed) Is 4WD
(Over, Middle, Right) Is N
(Up, Right) Is 4L
(some chime in on this one please, am I correct, I am not familiure with this particular shifter)
This one is the SECOND Button Shifter out of an 02' Runner.
(not the greatest but best I could get...)
This is how it works:
(Back, Button Not Pressed) Is 2Hi
(Back, Button Pressed) Is AWD
(Back, Button Pressed, and Button On Dash Pressed) Is 4WD
(here is a picture of the button)
(Stick In the Middle) Is N
(Up) Is 4Lo
And there you have it...
The three T-Case Shifters offered in the 3rd Generations...
If there is any mistakes please chime in and I will edit my post...

You know...
After reviewing all of these I think the 'Multi-Mode' Shifter was one of the best ideas...
You have the AWD feature
Then You pull back and that locks the center diff and gives you 4WD
Then you also have the button on the dash for the Rear Dif Lock
All you need is a front dif lock and your set...
IMO
I wish I had that setup...
There are times where I really could have used the AWD feature...
