compression problems

I just rebuilt my engine in my 94 4x4. Its a 22re and I put in new pistons and everything. it will only crank up after trying forever, once running it runs fine, but when I shut it off, it wont crank back up. Adjust timing and play with it a little while and it will finally start again. Put a compression tester on it and only got 25 on 3 and 50 on the last one. suppesed to be around 175. Does anyone know what my problem could be?

Maybe you didn't adjust the valves correctly. If I remember correctly from reading other's threads here, there is a cold adjustment and then you have to readjust when they are hot.

You also could have gotten a bad rebuild on the head and the valves aren't seating correctly.

That's my guesses.

Good Luck

I adjusted the valves and all that good stuff. The valves not seating could be a problem, but on all 4 cylinders? Someone told my dad that if the rings were in upside down, it would cause a loss in comp, but I also know from experience that if the timing is off, it will cause all the valves to still be open on the compression stroke.

Squirt some oil in the cylinders and see what the compression comes to..

If your compression is that bad - and the valves are adjusted properly, you might as well start tearing it back down and identify the culprit.
