Clutch issue - 2004 Tacoma
#22
Sorry...let me try again:
Once you've got your clutch installed and tranny back in place, before you install the slave, wiggle your clutch fork back and forth and see how much free play there is on the end the slave engages.
Before disassembly, my fork had quite a bit of free play at the slave contact point, but now that its disassembled, I can press the throwout bearing against the fork (inside the housing) and that results in there being quite a bit less play at the slave engagement point.
Remember, I think you said your fork wiggled up and down...mine wiggled back and forth and seemed too loose.
I could maybe PM you my phone # if the above is still clear as mud. Good luck this eve!

I'd be curious to know how much fore/aft wiggle after the tranny is in the truck and the pressure plate is applying the pressure to fork, but with no slave. In other words, everything assembled except slave cylinder not installed.
Make any sense?
Thanks a ton!

I'm guessing if you hold throwout bearing against fork now there is virtually no fore aft play too. Will be interesting to see if pressure plate holds it that tight.
Have a blast in Hawaii you lucky dog!!

Hi. Yes...it is reassembled. We had a friend come over and help us get the tranny back in. He and my son did most of the work.
Prior to that, we took the transmission and clutch parts to a master toyota tech that I know and he looked at everything and said it all looked fine. Somehow, the throwout bearing must have been hung up. I don't know...and neither did he.
What I do know is that it is working and we didn't re-bleed it. Went through nearly 3 quarts of fluid bleeding and bleeding and bleeding before we installed a new clutch kit and flywheel. The friend who put the slave back on said he had to press the cylinder in before he could reinstall it due to position of fork being different than when disassembled. That told me right there we were on the right track.
Thanks for checking. Did you get yours done too?

Mines all back together and driving, but im having a funny noise thats not normal for a clutch, i had friend mechanic look at it and it stumped him because its not a normal clutch noise but it kinda seems like thats where its coming from, so its going on stands next week to try and get it to repeat off of a load, we believe the pressure plate i bought from toyota was bad from the factory so the pressure springs arent applying enough pressure to the clutch and making a wierd noise that sounds like a whale, but it only happens after the engines hot and been driving for awhile and it doesnt happen everytime, so its really wierd

Bummer! You're gonna be an expert at it soon. Hope you find the problem.
We put in an LCE clutch kit with a 38 lb flywheel. My son likes the added torque....said it lowered the powerband and can pull hills he used to have to downshift on. I've not driven it since we fixed it.
