clunk in rear end

so last week i was pulling in to the drive when BAM and then about every 12' bam again. I was no my lunch so i grabbed the FJ40 and went back to work, I have falily in town from the UK for the last 10 days so i could not work on the truck until now. I thought to my self this sound like i ripped a tooth off the ring gear. I jacked up the rear end and the pinion would spin about 3 1/2 times around and would bound up tight, i could turn it either way but when once it bound up i could not move it. So i pulled the drain plug and found all kinds of metal, time to pull the 3rd. (diff oil have need changed by me 10,000 mi ago) Once i pulled the 3rd i could see why it was binding.

so my plan now is too remove the broken tooth file the ring gear a bit and slap it back together, so i can get the parts for an e-locker together. If the tooth had fallen out of the way i could of kept driving but where its logged right now it hits the head of the pinion

Ide say if you can go with out the truck for a few days then do that. take the bad out and kept out so you can quickly and easily put the new right in, not to mention the chances of damaging the seals while taking it apart over and over is greater.

But do what what you gotta do!

Your gonna love the rear locker

i wish i lived in a place that it could stay down for a week, but the HOA where i live want all cars to move every 3 days. So i think that i will be replacing the seals when i pull it apart to put the locker in. think that the locker in the 4-runner is a mixed blessing, i have a fj40 to beat up(arb's F/R on 34" swamper) and with the runner locked i might wheel it.
