check engine light, how to make it go away?

You never did tell us the year/model/specs. Also, did you have any trouble symptoms before or since the CEL came on? They should have given her the codes, you want and need to verify their findings before replacing an expensive part such as an alternator, if that is the problem.

Go back and get the code. If it is the alt it may just need new brushes.

Year is 2001, SR5 model w/ the V6 engine.
The only modifications I have done are stereo and amplifier/sub install.

I will be back with the code.
