Check engine light (cat.converter)
Well I threw a code today driving to the gym, went in to the dealer about 15 minutes ago and he pulled the code for me and it was the cat. He reset the light and said if it does it again then go ahead and worry about it, but until then just wait. So I'm going to wait...he said it could either be one of the 02 sensors misreading the emissions or the code is right.
Anybody had this problem on a '99 4Runner with 92k?

I can't remember what he said the actual code was...I can ask him. I'm waiting now to see if it throws it again...if it does I'll be sure to get the code. I've gone through a 1/4 tank of gas and it hasn't thrown it yet so...we'll see.
I'll see if I can get the code from him tomorrow.
Thanks for the reply lee!

The CEL for a bad cat came up on my '00 at about 70k last year. The dealer replaced it for free. If I recall, the emmisions stuff are warranted for 100k.

I would bet it was code P0420......which is not always a converter problem.

So when it says Bank 1 does that mean the first oxygen sensor? Would that be covered for 100k miles? I'm not the original owner but, would it still be covered?
If not, I will have to replace the 02 sensor(s) anyway, and my mileage has been getting worse little by little every fill-up...
MTL...thats the exact message that I got by the way, thanks for the link.
So what should I do, wait for it to come back on again and if its the same error, do the 02 sensors before replacing the cat?
Thanks again for the help,
Fink

I just had the bank 1 running lean code P0171 (I Think) and it was a dirty MAF.
I bought a O2 sensor and a new MAF, never installed them after cleaning the MAF the right way I've had no problem.
It has been almost two months and no CEL.

The dealer wanted to replace the cat on my step-mom's LC and the problem for that code ended up being the upper 02 sensor. Dealers like to sell cats if the can. They are $$$$$$.

i had a code like that about a week ago. some thing about the catalyst working below its threshold. it turned out to be a loose ground in the engine bay. let me know if you want me to take a pic of the ground

My cat went out last year around this time. I had probably 23,000 miles on it.
Dealer said emmissions are under warranty for 8 years.
I think I may be having to replace another soon.
If the CEL was flashing, that means the CAT is totally gone, as per dealer.

No the light was on solid...even though I am not the original owner of the vehicle it is still covered under that emissions warranty coverage?
Is there some documentation I can get so if they question me (they probably won't, I'm good friends with all of them up there) I can show it to them?
Thanks guys, I'm going to wait and see if it comes back, if it does, I'm not real sure what I should do.
If it comes back on (and is the same code) should I?
1. Replace the upper 02 sensor?
2. Replace the lower 02 sensor?
3. Replace both 02 sensors?
4. Have the dealer replace the cat under warranty?
Thanks guys!

Happened again, about two tanks of gas later...same code. I will now be on the search for a new cat.
Anything in particular I need to be sure this new one has or just any ole cat will do? Something that would help get a little better mileage or a performance upgrade would be nice!
Thanks guys!

2.25" Magnaflow Carsound Cat off ebay, center in center out should do the trick. I got a 2.5" (for a different car) for $52 shipped.
Here's one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Carso...91589025QQrdZ1

Im pretty sure its a federal offence to remove a propertly working cat. If you want to upgrade your cat, just drill some holes in it or somthing so it isnt properly working.
