ok newbie, first thing's first: find someone or some store with a code reader. get the code(s). then google:

OBD II codes

and then cross match the code to the problem.

come back, search for the specific code (i.e. 02 sensor, maf, etc), read the thread results and then go from there.

Anywhere from a loose gas cap to low blinker fluid...

I agree with Bob, have Auto Zone check it out for you for free and post the codes here or ask them.

Like everyone else has said...

You can buy a cheap generic code reader off of Harbor Freight and it'll give you the code. It will also come with a small manual to give you the definition of the code. Just saying that you have a CEL is going to be VERY hard to diagnose without anything further.

I have had CEL experience with 4 different Toyotas and they were all unique problems ranging from a dirty MAF to a dying battery.

Could be anything, on a road trip once and the CEL came on, turned out the gas cap wasn't on tight.

Do a search for cleaning the maf (mass air sensor). Try cleaning it first and have the code cleared and see if it comes back.

is it side specific? right bank, left bank? is it a set code or stored code? if u erased it, did it come bak imediatly? could be the MAF or maybe a cloged up fuel filter. Fuel pump going bad maybe? just throwing stuff out there.

If the MAFS cleaning doesn't clear it, the bank one (front, pre cat) 02 sensor is going to need replacing. Get them at URDUSA.com. Best price around.
