Changing fluids 4runner 3gen

Planning on changing the fluids to the transmission on my 4 runner 5 speed 4wd along with tcase. I'm very familiar using redline mt90 on my sport cars. My question is will my transmission be fine if I use redline mt90 fluid? Or should I stick to Toyota's fluid? My 4Runner has 175k. Reason I ask is because it's difficult to shift into 1st gear and reverse. But once in gear it's fine until I'm at a complete stop. I am currently readjusting the clutch pedal as I noticed when in reverse while holding the clutch all the way down my vehicle moves in reverse. I'm thinking clutch pedal needs some readjusting.

I'd look to failing clutch hydraulic components before I'd consider clutch pedal adjustments.

Your tranny will do fine with Redline MT90, or with any GL-4 spec gear oil.

GL-5 spec lubricants are what differentials want, but they often are a bit too slick to allow good syncro function in trannys, especially trannys with higher mileage.

Thanks Millball I'll check that out today. Also for the tcase I have used redline heavyweight shockproof, is that safe to do on the yota? Reason I ask is because the oil is very thick but it definitely has saved some tcases on my previous vehicles.

Thr Shockproof should be Ok unless you live somewhere very, very cold.

If the fluid change doesn't help shifting, there is a plastic bushing in the trans for the shifter lever, sometimes that will do it.

In my case, the clutch fork had three cracks in it, allowing it to bend. It started out by not wanting to go into 1st and reverse, then it would not go into any gear.

Good luck!

I am thinking the same thing at this point. It did become smoother but went back to becoming difficult to shift. I'll be removing transmission today.

If it does look like the clutch fork, you might think about changing the pivot that the fork rides on. The cracks on my fork had scratched up the ball on the pivot pretty good. Put a dab of grease on it when you button it back up.

When my shifting issues started, I changed fluids, and put in a new bushing, still didnt work. I put in a new master cylinder, same thing. I put in a new slave cylinder, too. Then I decided heck with it and tore out the trans and found the cracked clutch fork.

While I had it tore apart I had the flywheel surfaced and put in a new clutch, so I should be good for a while !
