Ok This is my First Time Changing a Clutch in this Truck!!

My normal Fare is the 86/88 Vehicles This truck while having all the same parts is for the most is completely different.

I have done several of the earlier ones and find them quite easy.

Upon looking at the Tacoma Do I need to remove the steering rack and sway bar?? I have tried searching and found many threads on what clutch to get

It was all I could do to get my hand into remove the battery cable from the starter.

The rear crossmember and the shifters are pretty similar.

Any tricks or way you do something Yes I have a Copy of the FSM but only does the electrical manual been of any help.


I just think it is getting one done it won`t be so bad next time.

I guess every body takes these to a shop to have a clutch done

I wish I would have known going in. It would have been worth the $2000.00 I was quoted but I had thought that was expensive live and learn.

its a pretty easy job to my surprise ya moving the sway bar helps other than that its just like taking one out of a 88 also i got a aisin clutch kit off ebay very good kit for 171 dollars

have a good floor jack or some ratchet straps to hold the transmission. There shouldn't be anything special about this clutch job.

shouldnt have to remove the steering or swaybar. May have to disconnect the passenger side exhaust from the header though. ratchet straps do come in very handy, as well as a transmission jack.

Well it is pretty much a moot point !!

I manged to pull the truck off the jack stands 6 ton ones under the frame rails. Never before in 30 plus years has something like this happened.


Using a 3/8" ratchet to try and break a starter bolt loose

All I can say is it was a good thing my chest stopped the truck from hitting the floor quite so hard.

Still not real sure how I got out.

A. Don't remove the exhaust like the FSM says. No need to.
B. Remove the sway bar, no need to pull the rack.

Other then that, its a normal clutch job and isn't fundamentally different from an oldschool Toyota.

You do have the FSM right?

I pretty much just gave up on the idea and went and bought another truck.

When I get around to doing it I might get the Tacoma back up on jack stands and see how much more damage is done from it hitting the floor
