i will be the first to admit that a bull bar serves only as a lighting mount but i dont need an ARB bumper if im not doing any off roading. i personally just like the look of them. pius222. does your '99 runner have the "fat lip" like my 2002? im still not sure what years that switch happened for. if so, what year was the donor taco?

I have to defend myself here in saying that I'm with onroadrunner, I don't think they look bad. I think its better than nothing...BUT...I don't think they give it near the look that the arb or tjm does. Again though, I'm looking forward to the purchase of my ARB as it provides a much greater utilitarian purpose...which I do use my truck for on more than one occasion per month for sure.

Onroadrunner...do what you want man. I think they look good too, and it will fulfil your need in mounting lights if you don't want the full use of the arb or tjm.

How do these mount? i can weld. would it be crazy to make my own mount or event weld it directly to the bumper/frame if i cant find one that fits?

 

Not exactly a picture of strength or rigidity, but if all you want to do is hang a tube off the front of a fat-bumpered 4Runner this will probably work.

Skrillah, does the bracketry require removal of the factory tow hook? IMHO that would be an enormous drawback even if you only 'wheeled occasionally.

 

Well...honestly I don't really know. I had a mishap with putting it on because the nut on the inside of the frame rail broke that holds the tow hook on. Sooooo...I cut a small hole in the front of the frame rail and removed the broken nut and bolt because otherwise the hook just spun hanging on by the bolt. If that makes any sense....basically just a royal PITA.

I don't know if it would hold that or not, honestly I don't think so. I don't have a tow point on the front anymore to say the least. I doubt it would work with it anyway.

 

Yes, the fat lip started in 1999, when I had mine on, the lights will be shaking even the bull bar mounts very secure.

 

You might check into the WAAG Front Runner.

It would provide a little bit more protection from brush/shrubs and is a little bit more low-profile. I do believe they make them for the '99-'02 Runners.

All you would need to do is drill two holes in the bar where you want the lights mounted. I like this because then you can decide where to put them and it opens up many more options for mounting the lights.

I also think this would be a little more sturdy than that Safari bar that you are looking at - less prone to shaking. This is just my opinion of course.
