Can't believe the fuel mileage!

I've had my 4runner for about a month now and have been tracking the fuel mileage pretty closely. I must say I'm very impressed if I compare it to my old 3.slow beast.

Here are the stats

452 km 52 liters 8.69 km/l or 20mpg US or 24.5 UK gallons
482 km 50 liters 9.64 km/l or 22.6mpg US or 27mpg UK gallons
426 km 40 liters 10.65 km/l or 25mpg US or 30mpg UK gallons

These are mostly highway figures. Is anyone else getting this kind of mileage on the highway?

My Runner is all stock right now with the 5vzfe and auto tranny. 35 psi in the tires.

how the hell are you breaking 400km? im lucky if i get 300 you must be doing more highway driving...as 90% of my driving is all city (stop/go/on/off/etc) and 5% highway and 5% wheeling haha. but then again, ive got lift & 33's etc. but still..even when it was stock i was barely getting 350...

how are you establishing how much youve used ie: 52l vs 50l?

considering our prices..you's a lucky mofo

Excellent! But have you trended it over time? I've been tracking mileage at every fill-up for years and find that the monthly average (I typically fill-up from below a half tank twice per week) is what really is indicative of your mileage.

I typically get 22 mpg highway but most of my driving is a mix of 90% hilly back country roads and 10% small town traffic where I get about 20-21. I'm stock with the exception of the deckplate mod and also run my tires around 33-35 psi.

BTW, my '90 3.slow got about the same mileage.

That's great, what elevation are you at? My best mileage comes above 5000 ft, (less wind resistance at higher elevations because the air is thinner)

Wouldn't the improved fuel mileage above 5000 ft. be attributed to the air-fuel ratios and other combustion variables rather than wind resistance? I know that my boat's outboard motor requires carb adjustments when I go from mountain lakes to lower elevation bodies of water.

Yeah, I'm getting off-topic...

With highprofile vehicles like these wind resistance is significant.

I'm getting close to that, around 450 km on 55 litres or so, and that's with 32" tires and a lift. Much better than my old 93 with the 3.0.

That's not fair, you can't compare a 4 cyl.

Yeah, but you need to remember that ATLANTA highway driving vs. Vudbstr's B.C. or robcogliani26's UTAH highway driving can play a significant role in varying highway mileage figures. Take it from a Philly-raised boy that has lost (most of) his road rage!

I've got 265/75's at 35psi and the equivelant of a deckplate mod and I'm getting 20-21 right now with about 60/40 highway. More city gets about 18-19, and in winter I get an unbearable 15-16. This is the only thing summer is good for IMO! This mileage is one golden reason I can't bring myself to get a new 4Runner or FJ. A bigger engine with roughly the same mileage and they prefer you use premium - it's just not worth it.

I get great mpg with my 5vzfe, 5-speed, 4x4, 4.10:1 geared, LT 265/75R16 shod 4Runner too. How you drive, will make the biggest difference in fuel mileage.

The elevation varied from just over a 1000 feet to 4000ft on one of the trips. I did drive it very easy though, but always just over the posted speed limit.

Is everyone using the air conditioner when they drive and still get the 19-20 mpg or does it use up gas way faster.

I average about 18-20 in my 02 Runner 4wd, that is in town, I have had it 5 months and am yet to go on a highway trip. 18 is all town and the 20 would be a few short road trips mixed in. I fill my tank between 270-300 miles and generally put in about 16 gallons. Before this truck I had an 00 4wd Runner w/ the 2.7 and let's just say I wish I had not gotten in the accident, I miss 20mpg all city and 25 highway. While the power in the 02 is better it's not that much better, I'd prefer the mileage.

I can't stand the heat so with the weather like it's been, I'm cranking the A/C all day, except the early morning. I'm still getting about 20mpg, so not much difference.

Wow, I used to get 21.5 avg and I was happy with that, and if I took it really easy I could get 25, but now my milage is dropping and I dont know why. I'm down to an avg of 18, and 21.5 if i take it easy
