can toyota make a key using vin?
All my keys are worn down too much to have someone copy them.. I remember reading in a post that someone with a 3rd gen 4runner had a key made giving the vin to the dealer. Could they do this for my 89 pickup, or is the only option probably a locksmith?

Yeah...thats why its really good to make friends with the people up at the dealer. They are supposed to run the VIN through the computer first to see if the car has been worked on there before, if it has been and the service advisor recognizes you then its all good if not they'll ask for an ID...or atleast they're supposed to.
Some people etch out the VIN on their windshield and only rely on the one in the doorjam which is probably a really smart idea...for some reason there is a film covering the VIN in my windshield and my VIN isn't etched in the windows so the doorjam is all I got, works out well for me.
Sorry for rambling, but there was a big problem around here about a year ago with it so it was all over the news.

When I had keys made (a Saturn and a Ford), I had to show my registration and my drivers license. Ford had to send this info away (fax) and wait for an OK to cut my key.
For the Saturn, it had aready had a lock replaced (ign), so now it had door keys and ign key (sucks to have 2 diff ones). I pulled the ign assy and brought to the dealer. They re-pinned it to the origonal key using the VIN. Happy now with one key again.

They should verify that you are the registered owner, but then again liquor markets are supposed to verify your ID before selling liquor. My first Yota when I was 16 was stolen with a "new" key made from my VIN only at a local dealership.

When I bought my truck the keys came with a key tag that you are supposed to put away for safe keeping. Any good locksmith or a dealership can cut the key from this code. It was a small silver tag that came on the key ring. Sometimes they are in the glove box if the vehicle was sold used.
