I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but as an alternative to a marlin crawler, can a stock t-case be regeared? Specifically, leave 2H alone for obvious reason, leave 4H alone for winter driving and more modest wheeling, and set 4lo reeaally low for when you need to crawl along.

Seems like a simpler (and possibly cheaper) alternative to running dual cases. But maybe I'm missing something.

 

no, the chain driven case found in all new model toyotas cannot be regeared. the only way of getting lower tcase gears it is to add dual cases

 

You can switch to a 4 cyl geared case if you have the 3.0 and that case will accept a lower gear set.

 

i know you can with the 3.0, cause thats what i did on my 88. But i was talking about the new model 4runners with a driver side output on the tcase.

 

The case you have cannot be.

Sounds like you want one case with 4.7 gears.

Sadly this is not an option because it would put your front output on the wrong side. I really like 4.7 low with the auto.

 

The chain driven case uses a planetary drive system so regearing is out of the question.

It would be far cheaper to install dual cases........

 

you can't regear a toyota case in high range, but gear driven cases can(and most definitely) be regeared in low range. the reason for this is that in high range, power is transmitted directly through a shaft, not by gears like some other cases(dana 18, suzuki samurai etc)

 

He's asking about the low range on the 3rd gen t-case, which has the front driveshaft output on the driver side, the gear dirven case from the earlier rigs won't work, output is on passenger side.
