I got my Snugtop from Toyota. Believe it or not it was an option in 04. I got mine from Fremont Toyota and paid 1325 for it installed. My wife works for the NUMMI plant here so we get a good discount. List is around 1800. I got the Bedrug too. Also an option. You can see it on the webshots link in my sig. You might talk to them at Fremont Toyota and see if they will cut you a deal. It's worth a call.

Check the classifieds here, TTORA and custom tacos for deals. Also, since your in CA, check craigslist for good used caps. There's always somebody looking to get rid of one (I think there are atl east two in our classifieds right now, but not for d-cabs).

Good luck

Oh yeah, I suggest getting a high rise (do they make these for d-cab beds?)
so you don't smack your head when you lean in to grab stuff.

I looked for a good used (white) shell for my Taco xcab for the longest time (over a year maybe?) and couldn't come up with one. You probably do have a little advantage being in cali though. One thing you need to establish is how you want to use the shell. If it is just to secure/cover stuff and a little leaking is no big deal, that will broaden your choices quite a bit. However, if you want it to be leak-free, you need to be pretty choosey (and lucky). I would not recommend a boot between the cab and shell on a Tacoma with a 3rd brake light because of the contoured rear cab. It is prone to leaks because of trying to seal against the uneven surface where the 3rd brake light is.

FYI - I very recently know of a guy who got some really poor service from Leer - he has a shell that is relatively new, and leaking, and his response from his dealer and Leer was "I took it back to the dealer, who advised me that there is no way to prevent leakage with any shell. I contacted Leer and received the same response. "

I would be skeptical of how well an over-the-rail liner might affect the seal.

I got an ARE shell last year and I really love it. SnugTop was my first choice, but their pricing seemed outrageous to me. You can see my (custom) camper setup here (click pic) Good luck with it!

Uno mas topper

Oh yea, FWIW, my friend Steve has had a SnugTop on his Taco for quite some time now, and is very happy with it. Good quality product. (click pic to see some of his setup)

Another thing to remember - the rubber boot will rub the paint off. I'm amazed at how many people take their cap off after a year or two and discover this and are angry!

I found a used one a few months ago, and it was by far the best purchase I've made for my truck, and I saved around a grand. I took the liner out when I picked up the shell, and it didn't leak at all. I have since put the liner (over-the-rail) back in, because my rails looked horrible from the liner rubbing the paint away. It leaks a little now, but nothing that some foam tape can't fix. It also appears that I have some small wings from the shell pressing on the liner. I'm debating on cutting the rails off and getting the rails covered in Line-X to hide the paint chips, as I cannot afford to do the whole thing right now.

TRDgal, I just got off the phone with Dominick at Campway's in Hayward. According to him, they are the largest Snugtop dealership in the country. Anyway, he quoted me $1567.55 plus tax and install for your DCab. That will be a total of 1769.71 installed out the door. If you are interested, just tell him that you are the person Dave with the supercharged Tacoma talked to him about.

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone has had their shell painted. I was given a green shell, and a gold truck. Don't think that would look too good. The Autobody shops want $500, but I'll bet there is somewhere else that is cheaper.
thanx,
-Greg

Please post a "Wanted to Buy" thread in the YotaTech Marketplace section of the forum, you will not only get more exposure that way but that is the correct area for inquiries like that.

Thanks,

Fink

Dcab Topper

TRDGal,

I have a Century Brand topper for an 04 DCab that will give you a good idea of what yours will look like. I have a sprayed in bedliner that is 1/8 of an inch thick over the rail so it's pretty comparable.

I was patient and scrubbed craigslist for 2 months and found this topper for $300. Snugtop and ARE brands seems to go between $1000 - $1700 in my pricing. My century is kind of off brand but I get compliments every day plus it only ways about 150 lbs so it can be easily removed!

Just FYI...this is a very old thread.

TRDgal hasn't been active since 2004 so don't be offended if you don't hear anything from her.

I wanted a flush fit, without the Toyota OEM plastic rail cover showing between the top and bed. See photo. Had Toyota swap it for an under the rail bedliner, but even that one had a piece over the front rail, next to the cab. ARE dealer said it wasn’t a big deal and installed the cap, adding a little extra foam to make the transition. I was not happy with it. Next day I fixed it by lifting the cap and cutting the forward rail cover off with a dremel. If I were to do it again, I’d remove the Toyota accessory liner and spray in an under the rail liner.

This is what I did on my dbl cab also. I had to cut the forward section of the bedliner so the shell fit flush. I used 3M automotive two sided tape to keep the shell from moving. btw, the shell is a ARE Z Series.

Now if I could only figure out how to run power to a light inside the shell I would be happy.
