a/c problem??
Ok, I am trying to figure out this problem while its cool out so I dont forget about it until summer.
The a/c has never really been cold in my 4runner, just cool. But it depends... if its early in the morning, it will be ice cold, but if its the middle of the day, its a little cold but not much.
I recharged it with freon since I figured that was a good place to start. The stuff I put in had the dye in it, and I looked around with a black light and saw no leaks other than a little around the filler nozzle since it dripped and I could see it through the site glass glowing.
So I am guessing I dont have a leak since I filled it quite a while ago. Should I look for the leak with the light while the truck is running or would the stuff still be there, its been a few days or week since I have used it.
The compressor clutch does kick in, and seems to work fine, it just doesnt give very cold air. Driving at a higher rate of speed doesnt help either.
I hate to bring it to an a/c shop not having any idea since I know it'll = $$$

134a needs to be charged correctly, too much it won't cool correctly, too little, won't cool correctly. To test correctly you will need a set of gauges...
couple of shade tree things with a/c:
-Is the sight glass on drier clear with few small bubbles w/compressor cycles?
-look at fittings, are they wet with oil?this indicates a leak.
-dye is good,go over system w/black light, pay close attention to highside fittings especially on drier and condensor, and front of compressor seal.
-check inbetween your radiator and condensor for leaves/debris,if too much, could cause problems.
If no leaks and not good cooling, chances are your system is overfilled and or drier is saturated(partially clogged).
If it was my truck and you are certain of no leaks, this is what I would do.
replace the a/c drier along with 2 drier o-rings and slowly charge the system untill the sight glass gets clear with a few bubbles apearing w/compressor cycling....
Normally you would pull out a/c w/ machine and recover 134a,pull to vacuum, replace parts, pull vacuum, charge system w/ correct amount 134a...
shade tree:
let truck sit not running(this will equalize system pressure),remove grill, have new drier ready to go w/tools(10mm's)....push in valves, both high and low side, untill 134a is out
(this is going to get messy, especially with the dye, wear saftey glasses and have rags covering valve as you release 134a)....
Once all the 134a is out
QUICKLY remove and install new drier....put one can 134a in low side...get another can ready..start truck,a/c on, slowly add second can untill sight glass starts to mostly be clear...MORE is not better with 134a...keep on adding untill you just get a bubble here and there..and stop.
Put your hands on the high side line...should be HOT,low side should be cold..at some point you walk the line of too little too much 134a...you can always add a little more...taking some out is a pain.
good luck
