i have a 84 xtra cab with 22re and it gets hot when idling. The idle control does kick in when idling when the ac is on .When i turn on the ac it DOES idle at the same rpms as normal idle.When i accelerate or cruise it gets cold after a while and stays cold until i stop and idle.I was told this is pretty normal for these trucks but i dont think it is right..The ac gets very cold though when driving, Eric

 

The point of the idle up valve is to compensate for the compressor when its on. So, your RPM's should be "normal" if the valve is doing its job, maybe a tad higher.

When you sit, there is no air flowing over the condenser, thus the cooling efficiency of the system is not optimal.

 

You need to check and make sure the A/C compressor clutch is staying engaged at idle. ( I remember there was an adjustment on the A/C amplifier that would determine the low rpm a/c cut-off on some older toyotas. )

Then inspect the sight glass on the reciever dryer (small tank behind grill with a inspection window on top, possibly covered with a blue cap) and check to see if there are any bubbles in the view (A/C on, of course). If so, then your low on refrigerant.

Also make sure the Condensor (in front of radiator) is clean and not obstructed with debris/dirt etc..

 

my trusty toyota mechanic fixed my problem.He turned my idle up to about 1k and adjusted a plastic screw on the efi unit.It blows cold at idle. Thanks for the replys!

 

I have the same problem on my '92. I think that not enough air is getting pulled threw the condenser to keep the air cool. I've been reading a lot of posts about the Taurus fan mod and it looks like the way to go. For power and it has the added side effect that it can pull all the air through that you need to keep your condenser cool.

 

I'm reviving this old thread to see if anyone has any other ideas. My 95 Runner blows only hot air when my rig is sitting still (in park or stopped at a red light, etc.). While I'm moving, the air coming out of the vents stays cold and gets down to 34 degrees F.

Who has done the Taurus fan mod mentioned in the thread? Did it help the "hot a/c at idle" issue?

Any other ideas to fix this problem?

 

I have the same problem as well with my '86 22RE 4runner. Also, I just ran into an issue recently where when the a/c is on and i am idling or moving at a very low speed (below 10 mph) the truck tends to shake and has shut offa few times. Can anyone tell me what could possibly be wrong? Does something need to be changed or what should be looked at?

you should have a fan in front of the condenser to push air through it for when you siting at a stoplight/going slow, maybe its not working...

 

To once again revive an old thread, I'd like to note that I just had my idle adjusted up a bit from 500 rpm's to about 800 rpm's, and now my A/C cools at stoplights and while parked. The resistor apparently kicks on at approximately 800 rpm's. A simply fix to a common problem.
