So I was out wheeling Saturday and the A/C quit on me. 100* outside made that a little sweaty. Anyways so I got home and looked things over. I could still hear the compressor clutch engage and I can see bubbles in the view port in front of the condenser. Then the air started blowing colder (but still not where it should be). I thought it might be a little low on refrigerant. I checked the low side with the system running and it was at about 10psi. I bought a refill canister and put the whole thing in. The pressure went up to where it was supposed to be, and then back down to ten in about 10 seconds. Anyways I thought if I had that big of a leak I should see it coming out. There was a puddle under the truck and I could see it leaking from this thing.
I didn't have a lot of time to look around before my lunch was over so I snapped a shot and figured I'd see what you guys think.

 

The low side pressure will fluctuate when the system is running. It should pull down to about 30 when the clutch is engaged and go up when it is disengaged. If it pulls any lower the evaporator can freeze up. What kind of puddle was underneath? Usually a/c PAG oil with dye is a radioactive green color. It's hard to tell but I think the thing in the picture is the evaporator drain, which will drip water when the system is running. How much refrigerant did you put in? You may not have enough in it. Also, if the system has leaked refrigerant out, there will be air in the lines which will have to be evacuated in order to properly fill it with refrigerant. You will probably want to take it to a shop that can evacuate and recharge the system and put some dye in it. Then, if there is a leak it will be easy to find. FYI you may have to check several shops as some won't recharge a known leaking system...

 

I think the picture is of the evaporator drain. The puddle is gone with no residue and it felt like water. With the system running the low side psi is about 20 now. The air is now noticeably cool, but not cool enough for me to think it is working properly. I don't mind taking it to a shop but I like tinkering and learning about the truck. I've never worked on the a/c system. Anyone know some good resources to look at for learning about automotive a/c systems? Thanks for the help.
