A/C help?

Has anyone here replaced just the A/C clutch on thier compressor? Mine locked up, but the compressor was working fine, and cold. I would rather just fix the clutch if I can, because then I dont have to pay the expensive R12 freon.

Thanks
Kent

On most compressors it's pretty simple. The clutch comes right off the front.

It's a fairly easy repair. Hardest part for me was getting the nut out of the compressor shaft. You'll also probably need a puller to get the old clutch off. Some compressors require shims on the clutch to set distance between the pully and clutch face. It's not that hard to set up though.

Take the nut off the front of the drive plate. Use a strap wrench (or big channel locks) to hold the drive plate from turning. Remove the drive plate. Watch for spacers and make sure you put them back correctly. Remove circlip and remove the pulley. Disconnect the clutch coil ground wire. Remove the circlip that holds the coil in place and pull the coil off. If it indexes with a pin, note how it lines up and reinstall it the same way.

There are variations of this, but they all work about the same way.
