I have been searching for awhile and can't find much information on what has happened here. Soo let me explain, I had just done water pump, timing belt, thermostat, and all new belts. I was on my way to work today when she sputtered lost power and I pulled over, got a tow home. In the mean time I pulledupper timing cover off when I should've been driving my other rig into work. But belt was shredded so I had to work 8 hours dwelling on what it could be, came home took everything off down to crank pulley and the lower idlers pulley is just laying there. Picked it up and you can see where the bracket clean snapped off. So my question is has anybody experienced this before?? Also how do I go about a repair? Still need to clean everything up and look at tensioner, I ran out of light. Also one cam shaft is 180* off Haha at least we have non interference engines!!

 

Assuming the hydraulic tensioner, buy another one. Replace old one. If you used the tensioner tool go sloooowwwwlllyyyy when you do it this time so as not to cause the bracket to crack and later fail on you.
Just a guess.

 

Hab states the likely issue...going too quickly with the tensioner compression tool puts to much pressure on the idler pulley cracking the mount.

Other have had the same problem by improper use of this tool.

 

First your crank pulley and now an idler bracket? Are you sure your torque wrench is working properly? Maybe you're over torquing things???

 

On the plus side, you'll have lots of experience with the front of your engine for when you do it all again in another 90,000 miles!

 

Yes torque wrench went straight in the trash can!!! I have never had sooo many problems before, I was thinking maybe with tensioner tool but I just barely went till the pin would slide through I was gentle, I swear. I didn't go past crank pulley tonight so is it just a straight bracket that is an easy replace? None of my tech buddies have even seen this happen before..

 

The problem is not in the lining up of the pin but retracting the tensioner slowly enough to let the pressure bleed off before giving the tool another turn and the tensions builds again, then wait, then repeat over and over.

Can you post up a pic of the bracket? On the lower idler pulley, the bracket is built into the pulley.

Easy to replace. Not the cheapest thing in town, but not bad. Gentle good. Super slow gentle better.


Guess you don't have a torque wrench that can be calibrated? They're just so darned expensive, especially those that can do 217ft lbs.

 

13505 is the part # for the pulley It's self. It's the bracket that holds pulley on I've got part numbers for Toyota ingrained into my brain hahaha . I have tried loading pics before using photo bucket but they have never worked. Also its dark already will have to take picks tomorrow. I will try tho of just the pulley by itself and see if pics work now

 

This is one piece. Where did it break? I was half joking about the T wrench.

Ya I'm serious about torque wrench, Damn thing was broken that's what caused me to put soo much pressure on crank pulley and break it. Nobody has seen anything like it hahaha they're like holy cow how strong are you!!!

 

That break doesn't look like over torque on the mount. Looks like too much pressure on the pulley itself. Maybe it got dropped or hit and a crack started at a bad place...?

 

I have no idea, honestly I didn't even touch that pulley while changing t/belt. Just a stress crack that I failed to notice, luckily my boss is just going to warranty that shredded one, so free replacement. Or maybe new belt had to much tension on pulley? Who knows? But its time to replace it....does bracket come with pulley? Is it an easy swap out?

 

Yes the part I pictured is the same one that rworegon is referring to. It's one piece. Simple bolt on. You'll just have to retension your tensioner.

 

Right on I'll figure it all out tomorrow, you think I should replace tensioner too? I might as well just to stay problem free. I mean I'm only at 94k stuff shouldn't be breaking this easy or I need to learn how to be more gentle hahaha

 

I would think your tensioner could go another 90k
