Speaking of that - how many of you knew that the factory steel SR5 rims for 1984 (rare indeed) were GOLD painted? Not just the centers - the whole rim. The chrome came in 85.

Kevlar? THAT I'd like to see. You can't coat a wheel with kevlar, it's not a liquid, it's a stranded fiber made of aramid, and is usually woven into cloth form or long-stranded into rope. (I have Kevlar in my sails and aramid in a lot of the high tech lines on my sailboats.) Fake CF on wheels I have seen though.

I'll sail anything!! I've been addicted for about 34 years now. I own a couple of dinghies (I build small boats) and a 22 footer for cruising which should launch this summer- rebuilt from a wrecked derelict, and a Santana 20, which is what I campaign - took 10th in the Nationals once. Ohter than that we're upper middle pack or rear of the lead group or something - usually 6th or 7th in a 20+ boat fleet - we never let competitiveness get in the way of just good fun. (REad: sail too hard spill too much beer...) I also crew for offshore races on a Tartan 41, and anything else that I can get on (and get time off for...) I've raced everything from an El Toro to crewing on a 70 foot sled. The only reason I hold a job is so I can buy beer and sails.

Oh no, I better go out and spend a whole bunch of money on new rims because the black ones are out of style, according to a bunch of guys on the internet! Sometimes this board becomes little too "Queer Eye" for me, not that there's anything wrong with that. Go with whatever you like, hell, wear Punky Brewster leg warmers while you do it, as long as your happy!

Ok so going off memory wasn't a good idea in this case. It was Teflon and not kevlar...O well guess I just had kevlar on the brain.
Anyhow the rims I was referring to are made by American Racing (ATX Series) are coated with teflon and not the kevlar that I was initially referred to.
Take a look see: http://www.americanracing.com/atx/

They look great without the center hub covers and some silver lug nuts.
They do require a 1/4inch wheel spacer as they will rub against the caliper. The wheel spacer that slides over the lug bolts has worked just fine for me, even though most people are scared of them and don't recommend them. About $30 for a set.
I may be putting mine up for sale for $200 soon with some 31in mud terrains. Can't be making these long trips anymore with big tires.
