Hey everybody i just joined the forums cuz its really active and most other yota sites are not.
anyways, my friend will be dropping a 454 in his truck and i may be able to get his old (327 i think) motor cheap. I have a 1982 pickup and was wondering if it could make the swap. Mostly i need to know if the Tranny could handle it, im figuring not.
Would i be better to go with something like a 327, a V6, or just get an exhaust system and stuff like that for my stock 22r?

you gotta be kidding me....
327 in a HEARTBEAT if your buddy can help you with it. Tranny will die if you don't baby it though.
Another option that many have done:
5vze swap
7mgte swap
2jzgte swap <----hasn't been done YET. (hint)

22r is very low powered, extremely reliable, simple to work on and mediocre on fuel mileage.
327 is a well powered, lesser but still reliable, a little more complex and poor gas mileage.
that being said, i'd love to swap a 327 in mine, but i may regret it a few months down the road.

The L series tranny will die a violent death even if you baby it. Maybe if it were a later W or R series it would have half a chance. Having been through a few V8 swaps, all I can say is that it is not to be taken lightly. Expect it to cost more than your budget. Expect it to keep on costing more than expected.

unless your going to chevy axles, and transmission/transfer case (if your truck is a 4x4), im not sure if id do it especially if you got a lead foot, my friends are doing a swap with a 81 4x4, they are using full drivetrain out of a mid 70's chevy, they had to do a bodylift to make room for the tranny/distribitor, and make new spring hangers because they are using chevy springs, they also put the radiator in the back because of clearance problrms in the front. hope this helps a little bit on your options

i personally never see the benefit of putting a toyota body on a fullsize chassis. i have a buddy who did it...albeit ghetto rigged(he's from the grays harbor area )
you get much less space....and plus the fact that it's heart is no longer a toyota. i agree that the L series tranny will die a violent death behind anything larger than stock. enough of them have died a violent death behind perfectly stock engines!
and 22Rs can get decent gas milage. just not with large tires and a lot of wind resistance
