Big Tundra brakes on 3rd Gen 4runner
#183
any comparison threads out there guys on how effective this upgrade is? I would even welcome some seats of the pants opinions but any real data is good data if you know what I mean.
you caught me lurking along, I don't see the need myself. Compared to my 2nd gen this newest Runner of mine stops on a dime and gives back change.
But I value such esteemed opinions as Lars and a few others of you...

Here are my thoughts. If your brakes work without shuddering, you can lock up the tires at will and threshold brake with good modulation with the stock system then there is no reason to swap anything. My problem was that the stock and after market rotors would warp very quickly. Mind you I don't drive my 4runner as fast or brake like I do my IS350 but I do tow. Even prior to towing the rotors would warp though. I think the calipers had issues because new rotors would warp. It was also difficult to elicit tire lockup. The brake were spongy but I attribute that to old fluid having absorbed too much moisture.
The tundra setup has been really bomb proof. Not having strong brakes is uncomfortable. These brakes easily lock my 33's but more importantly the modulation and fade resistance has been excellent. The tires and suspension are the limitation at this point to faster stopping. That's fine with me. Keep in mind that if the truck pulls left or right when braking that you should first look for a cross camber or cross caster issue. Even if static camber is ok, you may have more suspension dive on one side under braking that can cause cross camber. I just had that issue before I swapped in my tundra springs. When I checked my alignment Sure enough the cross castor was off 2 degrees. I prefer to do my own alignment to get custom specs. The tundra springs eliminated brake dive and made the brakes feel firmer; and interesting side effect.

that is the exact type of feedback I sought -thanks LD.
Never had any rotor warping on this 3rd gen. No towing done or anticipated.
Good pedal feel and stable, very little nose dive. Very solid right to point of lockup-I would like a bit of lockup -but honestly I like it when the brakes are smarter than me.
Appreciate the reply-well spoken and even better read.

Lars couldn't have said it better. I have a shake like an earthquake due to the warped rotor. Also like he said it's still not like brakes on a IS but with a lifted SUV u arent going for a record stop you r going more for a feel that doesn't shake u to death and know that with the thicker rotors you won't have to worry about the warp. It's like getting a big brake kit for cheap. If u don't have a shake or stopping problem then no need for the upgrade. And if you don't have been tires or a 4x4 then probably no worries. My 2 pennies!

I always hear about these "warped rotors" but have never ever once seen proof.

I didn't measure what the actual width of them were but i can. Is that what you were asking? Also the pads looked like crap and the brake lines were cracked so lots of stuff needed to be done. Also the fluid is brake fluid and on the passenger side i replaced the CV joint. Doing the Driver side tomorrow.

i didn't measure either set of rotors either. my oem brakes shuddered badly after some years. not believing big 13" were warping i replaced the rotors with powerslots, drums, shoes and put in carbon metalic pads. everything got better but shuddering came back after some months. it got really bad after towing my trailer through utah. a year now with the tundra setup. zero shudder and the brakes easily panic stop the truck.

WOW!!! Finally took out my YOYO today and I can say it probably is the best upgrade out there. There is no shake or shimmy when i'm driving and the braking is very smooth and easy to feel. I dont care if you think you might need it or not if you think about changing the brake do this Tundra brake up grade you will be more happy than when you first bought it promise.

1998 4Runner Brake Upgrade
I have a supercharged 98 4Runner with IPT upgraded valved body and transmission cooler.
I pull a 6000lb boat & trailer I need to have to best brakes possible up front (even though the trailer has 4 wheel disc brakes as well).
My front brakes used to do the shimmy shake only when I would turn and brake at the same time.
Now it happens even when going straight and braking so I decided to Get R' Done and get the bigger Tundra Calipers.
I ordered the Bigger 231mm Calipers from Josh at Nix 99 and the first time I received the smaller S13WE 199mm calipers instead.
He told me he tracked down a pair in Idaho and sent them to me.
When I opened the box I noticed the calipers had 13WL stamped on them and not S13WL.
Does any know if theses calipers will work?
I'd hate to get everything on my truck apart only to reinstall it all again.
Your help is greatly appreciated

13WL along with some OEM pads and decent rotors and you will be good to go. Check your brake likes while under there.
Any pics of the boat? I have one that weighs 4400 lbs with everything, only need pull it two miles to and from the landing, but needed a Tundra to feel safe pulling it any farther than that.

Rotor & Pad Questions
Well I got the calipers cleaned up and ready for paint

Now I need to order the rotors and pads.
Any Recommendations?
I noticed that some used slotted and crossed drilled rotors.
What the best place to order rotors and pads from?
What year Tundra should I tell them I have to make sure I get the right parts?
Thanks again for all the input

Finished Big Brake Kit on my 98 4Runner
Well I finished installing the Big Brake Kit.
Pretty simple installation. Even got my wife to help me bleed them
All I can say is WOW!
No more shimmy or shake and I'm so glad I did it.
Purchased the Calipers from Nix 99
Purchased the Discs & Pads from my local Westbay Auto Parts.
I was able to upgrades my brakes for a lot less than the stealership was going to charge me to replace them with th same problematic discs and rotors.
