Battery, Battery, which one to pick...
#42
I went to Sam's today looking for a Battery for my Jeep, which is in storage at the moment and does not get driven everyday. I am getting it out for the summer and I was all set to pick up a Yellow top Optima. It was $165, the Red top was like $145, and an Interstate battery was $55. The Yellow top only has a 12 mo. replacement and like a 24 mo prorated warranty. The interstate has an 18 mo. replacement and a 60 mo. Prorated warranty. I don't see how I can justify the Optima when the warranty is so worthless. I can buy 3 of the Interstates for the price, plus they have a better warranty.
From what I have read here, it seems like all batteries are crap. You can buy an Optima and it is still a crap shoot as to if it will prematurely give up on you. It may end up lasting 10 years, but if it dies in 18 mo. you are still screwed and out three times what a regular battery would have cost.
Funny story though....I know from experience that Die Hards are garbage and most DIE HARD....but I have a friend who has a Die Hard that is over 12 year old and still works. Not my experience with Die Hards, I have never had one last more than two years.

Red top optimas DO NOT have a 3 year and 6 year, plain and simple:

Seeing as I sell the dang things for a living I can tell you right now the best warranty period is through AAA and they use exide batteries-same ones nascar uses and they make orbital..same tech. Its all about the CCA and reserve. I can tell you right now that so long as you maintain the battery and keep it clean your good to go.
My boss has a 454 1990 chevy pick up thats hardly ever run, go out and it starts right up without a problem. The thing SITS, ALOT. Running it maybe once a month is alot.
I am waiting for my dynacell to take a poo so I can install one in mine for cost.
Not once thus far in work has a person complained about a previously installed AAA battery, except for the people whose alternators go and eat the battery away-such as the case yesterday.
Why people over stress about the things I dont know. Not all are equal, but a good one will last and last and last if you take care of it. If you let it corrode away thats your fault, battery terminal cleaner and protector are your friends!
Anyways, buy the ones you want, but I rather 36 month free, even with abuse and 36 month prorate.

What do you mean by AAA? I have heard of Exide, but I have never seen them here. We no longer have good autoparts stores here in Texas. I am afraid I will kill the Red top Optima from it sitting, and while I like the warranty, it is not much better than the Interstate (and it is only $55)

AAA as in the auto club, the company I work for contracts through them to do battery installs among other road side assistance (jumps, flats, etc) for their members.
It can get just as hot here as Texas too, sometimes the summer days peak at over 100F, mostly 90-100F though. What kills your battery is the corrosion, battery terminal protector will help, and cleaning your terminals once a month or every few months help.
Once they get corroded your sunk unless you spend about 10 minutes cleaning them, really well.
I see people day in and out with dead batteries that are corroded, I pulled a dynacell outta a guys 00 tundra today and it was all corroded, yet my dynacell (that previous owner installed) has not been kindly taken care of up until I recently bothered, drained a few times, etc. No corrosion, no problems.

I thought you meant the Auto club, but I wasn't sure. Are the Exides sealed?

Try 30 100+ days. Peaking at around 112 F. I highly understand about the corrosion. They just "boil" over here from expansion. Our batteries look deformed here, like they have been blown up with air and then relaxed. They are not square, they are rounded. I have terminal protectors and anti-oxidant on the terminals. I will admit I don't clean them once a month...that's kinda impractical. You know I'm a Dentist...I bet you don't floss everyday....Ha...Ha!
It is kind of how up north cars rust out and we down south don't have a clue what they are talking about/Don't understand the big deal. Here rust is when you get a scratch and you get redish stuff in it. LOL.

oh, and that was good info none the less CJM. And for people that don't live on the surafce of the sun those batteries are what they need. We just need a little differnt battery down here that is all.

I went with the interstate...$55 at Sam's...It has a good warranty and I figure I can buy 3 of them for the price of the Optima. My Jeep has been in storage for 8 months. It has always been garage kept and we are in the process of building a house with a 3 car garage. Popped the battery in, and she started right up on the first turn!

I'll be like love at first sight when you see it. Great choice! Did you order it online or manage to pick one up from a brick + mortar place? I've never seen one sold anywhere.

Yeah, i could not find one local either.
I ended up buying it online for $215 + $15 shipping (they are in Texas).
So it worked out pretty good. I found it a little cheaper but the higher shipping cost to me made it more to me.
