bad transmission???
I have a 1996 toyota tacoma 4wheel drive with a 3rz and manual tranny.
I got back from the woods yesterday and realized that whenever i would put my truck in reverse while in two wheel drive and drive around there was a weird clanking noise, the best way to describe it is the clanking that a u joint makes before it blows up. I didnt put my truck to work at all yesterday just drove around in the snow in everyone else's ruts and hung out. Thinking it was more than likely a bad u joint i dropped my rear drive line and decided to fire up my truck afterwards and run it in reverse without a driveline to make sure it was just a u joint. Unfortunately it wasnt, it sounds and physically feels like the knocking is coming from my transmission right in front of the transfer case. Now once again this only happens when the truck is in reverse I was able to drive all over this morning and run errands without the truck clanking in any of the other 5 gears. So I'm assuming my transmission, my reverse gear in particular is blown up? I dont think it could be anything else, maybe a bad bearing of some kind? I also drained both the transfer case and the transmission oil and both looked just fine with no metal shavings in them at all which I thought was strange. I just wanted to pick your brains here before I go out and spend the money on a new transmission. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.
