Auto up/down windows

In my 2000 4runner, on the driver's side control panel I had auto up AND down windows buttons for both driver and passenger side windows. in my 2000 taco, its only auto down for my drivers window. no auto for down on the passenger windows (from drivers door) and no auto up for either. my question is, if i replaced both buttons with some auto/up down ones, would it work or are there some weird timers/relays elsewhere that accomplish this effect? thanks

I have thought about this for my MR2. I think it would. Only because the click i hear seams to come from the switch. Which tells me that its the only thing controling how long to keep the motor running.

According to the Online BGB for the MR2. The switch does the auto down feature. I dont see why it wouldn't do both if so equipped.

Taken from the BGB (service manual):

(I have taken out terminal numbers to simplify)

Auto Down Operation

The solenoid in the master switch is activated and it locks the driver's switch being pushed. Causing the motor to continue to rotate in auto down operation.
When the window has completely descended. The current flow between two terminals on the switch increases. As a result. The solenoid stops operating. The driver's switch turns off and flow is cut off. Stopping the motor so that auto stop occurs.

Man I love the online service manual for the MR2.

Been thinking about doing this too, all you need is to head to a yard and wire in the new switch-betcha its plug and play anyways.

Now if I can just get my Moon roof switch to auto close like it auto opens. holding the switch is so lame.

Because the auto open option is vary nice. something a BMW M5 doesnt even have.

I never understood why they did it that way, my camry was the same way. Too bad I hardly ever used it.

Yeah and that stopping 2/3 closed is annoying. Why?

methinks its a safety feature so you cant just press close and pay attention to someone else while your hair or cat's head is stuck in the window path. the stopping 2/3 of the way is the same concept so you dont hold your finer on it not paying attention while doing something else, for the same reason

You may be onto something. But I say let the same principles apply to the moon roof as the side windows. give it pinch protection. as for the hair well the side windows dont care why should the moon roof.

I betcha you could mod the switch to fully open/close anyways.

Honestly I have no desire to own another vehicle with a moon/sun roof, I had one in my camry and kept it closed almost the entire time. Its nosiy and annoying when doing anything over 25mph.

My mom had one in her last 2 cars and never really used them either..

i rather like the one in my 4runner

if you let it stop at that half way point that it does when you close it, and crack the rear window, its a nice breeze with out being in-your-face

As a former Toyota sales person, It is a safty feature that causes the sun/moon roof to stop while closing. I know it's anoying I don't like it on mine. I also thought and have watched as someone used the moonroof switch with their thumb and the palm of their hand cupped around the open edge of the front of the moonroof as it closes slowley and pinched the idot's hand. (another sales person, on show room floor,) So as far as safty, I guess you just can't idiot proof everything...... lol

As far as having a moon/sun roof, it can come in real handy for "venting," obnoxious oders from the passenger compartment of the unit. TJ

Thread Resurrection,
Just following up on a super old idea to see if it ever materialized. I just got a 04 taco that I'd like to do this to and was curious to whether is was just plug and play or if the window motors had to be swapped out or even more than that with the harness.

An alarm shop could do it for you but it is expensive. An amperage meter has to be installed and set so that when the window closes and the motor draws more amps it cuts the power instead of burning up the motor. Easiest way would be to find a donor and swap parts.

I've got a 2000 4runner that will be out the door at some point and I would just do the'ole switch-aroo if its just a bolt and clip operation. Im not much of a trace and splicer.
