Auto Problems

92 4RUNNER SR5 V6 auto. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I bought it 3 weeks ago cheap with tranny problems, it has a shutter in first unless you are very easy on the go pedal, and reverse did not work unless you were backing downhill, flat ground at idle or in low range. I drove it since then about 1000 miles, and yesterday the speedo started going nuts, read 35 at a stop, 80 at 20 etc, this while shifting very erratically, either not shifting, slipping, or acting like it had a shift kit, some times the motor would run erratically off idle in first gear, then reverse started working some. This happened within a half mile circling a parking lot trying to figure it out. Yes the fluid is full, I drained some and added a quart of Trans X about 600 miles ago, no change. According to the junkyard referance book only a 92 or 93 trans will swap, my junkyard has a 90 SR5 but we don't know what the differeces are. Does any one know how much a rebuild kit is?
Please help, this is my first toyota, I love except... I have always had Fords or IH's

Greetings,
Ah yes, the old Auto trans problems! There's and adjustment on these transmissions to tell the trans when to shift and to smoothe it out so it doesn't feel like a "shift kit", also if your idle is high you will feel harsher shifts also. You can also try draining the trans fluid and putting some fresh fluid in there with a new filter also, pretty easy to do. Don't forget to check the fluid in your transfer case as well, same thing it takes auto fluid to because it's an auto trans. If it's slipping bad, yeah your rpm's are going to go up and the trans will feel like it's in neutral. It could even be your Torque converter having no lock up! For each gear there's clutch packs and over time the wear out/slip...and need to be readjusted. Offhand To get one of these trans rebuilt will probably set you back over $1000!!!! www.jasperengines.com (I think that's the link) used to sell rebuilt ones.
Take care!
