For my sins I have an 85 F@rd F-150 and the lights are totally unacceptable.

I love the Silverstars in my Runner so I was wondering if I would better off replacing the sealed beam units with Silverstars or just adding some well aimed driving lights and leaving them on all the time...

I say replace them with silverstars. There's no way you can aim driving lights to where you'll be able to use them all the time without blinding somebody.
