Anyone replaced transfer case actuator on Tacoma?

Hi,

My 4wd is refusing to engage. I have the one touch system on my 2004 Tacoma.

I've taken it to an independent garage - they're usually ok - but they've had a hard time diagnosing what's wrong.

Right now they think the transfer case actuator isn't working. Which I can kinda accept. but they're telling me they have to take the transfer case off to replace the actuator because there's some kind of snap ring connecting the actuator to the fork shaft and it's inside the transfer case. And not only do they have to take the transfer case off, they have to drop the transmission at the same time for a total of something like 12 hours labour.

I've perused the FSM, but I haven't found a good picture (or description) of how to remove the actuator from the transfer case.

Has anyone taken the actuator off? is it really this big a pain?

thank you.

Bill

No idea. If you can't figure it out from the FSM, it can't hurt to ask the dealer for an estimate.

Doh!

The dealer says:

"No of course you don't have to take the transmission out to replace the actuator."

Looks like there is a snap ring holding the actuator in.
Step 22.
